I bought a spare engine a week or so back , I only got it for spares but after the man telling me it was running and looking it over , I thought it could be a good spare engine.

The only fault I can find with it is one of the header bolts has been drilled out badly..
From the pics is it fixable or just good for spares ?

engine reconditioners could probably salvage it, depending on how deep the stud goes into the head, and how much of the boss has been lost.
Whether it would be ecconomical to do so, is another matter.

Had two sheared studs done not long back, with no damaged boss area £30 a pop.

Basic principle is to mill out the old stud and the hole it screws into; you then tap that new, bigger hole, and either put in a 'helicoil', a sort of 'thread-sleeve' to make the threaded hole smaller, to take original size stud; or if the hole has to be made much bigger to get all the old stud out and remove damage, you 'plug'; sort of screw in a bolt, then mill it off flush with the casting, then drill & tap that, to to stud size.
If there isn't enough original metal in the area to take either a helicoil or plug, then the boss would have to be built up with aluminium weld / braze first.

Almost anything can be salvaged... it's just a matter of how much work it is, whether any-one will agree to do it, and how much they will charge you, if they do!

By the looks, its possible... but you need to talk to a M/C shop or Engine Recconners.

Hi Teflon Mike Very Happy

Thanks for the advice , yeah they made a right mess of it.
It was only cheap anyway £70 pound , if I could get it done for less than 50 pound I would but that's taking a chance the engine is ok..

Thanks for your help Mike...
