Hi guys

Posting in this section in hope that technical knowhows might be able to offer some guidance, mods move if in wrong section.

I just moved to Norfolk and want to buy a CHEAP 1500quid bike but with enough performance to get speed thrills and possibly take to snetterton which i believe is near.

There is a dealer selling a 1998 C1 ZX9R 34k miles, says he knows owner for many years etc, no real mention of service history, has wavey disks and polished sub frame, yosh can. thats about it really. asking price is 1600 however i offered 1300 and he kinda said yeh.

Now usual talking myself out of things; done research and so many people have had problems with gearbox on the C1, slipping out of gear, notouriously 3rd... now i dunno if im answering my own question, but if this a good buy?

I want to test drive but its got no m.o.t at moment so he said can go up and down road, obv not enough to see if it jumps out of gear is it...

Hes a reputable dealer been in business for 20+ years and i do trust etc but any opinions on this?

Just missed out on a 2002 RSV1000 mille 40k £1500..

so to recap ZX9R C1 yay or nay(34k on original Gbox).. or for 1500... something else, that is fast... ?

Cheers

You answered your own question really. Better off with an E1 because they had sorted the gearbox issue by then.

17 year old bike, dubious service history + Snetterton track day = potential for disaster and lost gears.

But at £1300 it's not a bad buy so ask yourself if you potato it could it be fixed and still be worth the money? Apparently a Z1000 box can be used as a replacement or a later E1.

TBH I'm not sure if the B had the gearbox issues or not. If the 1996 bike is clean then it's priced OK.

The 9s are really hit and miss though, some have been abused, crashed or ridden through winters and ended up very scabby (wheels and alloy like rear peg hangers seem to suffer badly). Others are well cared for and still fetch a fair price for their age.

B1 is a barge.

Z1000 gearboxes fit C1's. Think I'm just about to buy my old one back!

I ran a HPI/txt check against reg and came back all ok, buy says colour change yes.. in pics it looks very normal green kawa colours to me, google imagine on 1999 version shows same colour scheme...

When the gearbox shits itself, the
Z1000 gearbox gubbins is not a straight swap.

have fun.

Yes (going by the pics) it's a good buy, would expect to pay £1500-£2000 depending on condition.

They benefit from an Ohlins rear shock if you can find a 2nd hand one. I really liked mine and it's one bike I wish I hadn't got rid of.

I used the Zed shaft. It had extra grooves and circlips.

Pretty sure anyway. There's a thread on here somewhere with pictures and allsorts.

I think from memory I had to modify a circlip. Dunno. Still working well to date.

You all seem to have missed the fact that the OP got a ZX7R...
