Well one of them at least.

Picked this beast up for less than a grand Very Happy

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/_57%202_zpswqsht3ss.jpg

So far, front end has been rebuilt with blanked off anti-dive units, new progressive fork springs, fork seals & bushes, new front discs with new pistons & seals in the front callipers.

Front end off:

Forks Stripped:

Bad bush:

Front end back together:

Carbs are off for ultra-sonic cleaning & servicing. This weekend will see the oil seeping water pump removed & repaired, so of course fresh coolant and oil, and filters at the same time. Plus time permitting fuel tap out and overhauled, carb rubbers off and boiled to soften them back up.

Carbs out:

Great bike!Thumbs Up

Will be watching this thread with interest as these sort of R1 of it's day type bikes really appeal to me now instead of some current litre bike shit that's overpriced and not relevant to road riding.

I hope once you've fettled it and got it sorted that it rides really well too! I love my classic shit these days, and this bike was the one that toppled the 110bhp Air cooled 1100 dinosaur's forever!

Very very nice! Shocked

Looks very clean and original, how many miles has it done?

Probably a very numb question but what are those things on front of the forks opposite the calipers? Confused

Thanks all.

The anti dive units are the big hideous lumps on the front of the forks. One of those brilliant on paper, rubbish in the real world, motorcycle innovations. The front brakes divert into the anti-dive units and operate a small piston, so when you break some of the lever pressure is used to close the piston in the anti-dive unit, this restricts oil flow in the forks making them harder, and this reducing dive. That's the theory, in practice it makes the front brakes shit, and knackers up the handling.

Its actually quite far from original, its the wrong colour scheme for the year, its an A5 colour scheme, this is an A1 model. Wrong mirrors, mini indicators on the back end. The fork bottoms shouldn't be polished, the callipers have been badly painted, and there are a few non-standard bodges under the skin too. In honesty nothing that can't be rectified, but its surprising how non-standard and pretty standard looking bike can be once you get into details.

Its actually done 55k miles, although cosmetically it is pretty nice, mostly due to the respray its had at some point. Its had new fastners all round the bodywork too. Shame they didn't pay more attention to a few other things, like the correct spacers in the forks, and bothering to fit dust seals in the brake callipers. Still you can't have it all I guess.

At the moment the plan is just to get it running properly and MOT'd, then then get some use out of it, before the gritters come out.
I could flip it and make a tidy profit, but this is a keeper. Thumbs Up

It was on ebay mate, probably so cheap because it was advertised as needing a new starter clutch which is a big job. Easily a grand to be done in a bike shop.

A bit more work on the GPz today.

Oil & Coolant drained.

New oil filer fitted.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12032977_10153149408494013_7021414931197034616_n_zps71zomr2g.jpg

Now to try and solve the minor oil leak emanating from somewhere around the water pump.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/11229772_10153149408504013_2249418832040580655_o_zpsxlydfxmg.jpg

Eventually after a bit of swearing and removal of more parts than I expected.

The pump was out.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12019845_10153149408484013_3163266633728088887_n_zpswiqzqkoz.jpg

Cover off, and............yuk

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/11063755_10153149408749013_3553397935748406327_o_zpskp3o6wp8.jpg

Stripped down, cleaned up, waiting new seals.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12027251_10153149408709013_2973827957726356380_o_zps1m7qmacs.jpg

Back wheel out, needs new sprocket carrier bearing, will prob put new cush drive rubbers as well.

Apparently the Top Gun bike was originally a black 900. The film producers added the red band which makes it look like the 750, which was never available in the US. The Kawasaki badges were removed because Kwak wouldn't provide free bikes www.imcdb.org/vehicle_6406-Kawasaki-GPZ-900-R.html

Cruise is 5'7" and McGillis is 5'11", so in some scenes Cruise had 3" lifts in his boots. In this pic you can see his foot is angled way up as if he is on tip toes:

A woeful tale of a simple job made difficult.

To save some time and effort I decided to send my carbs off to be stripped & cleaned, so I could get on with other things.

On their way to the place this happened.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12049144_10153161240109013_4974023296387164913_n_zpsmm5ym9zc.jpg

You will notice the absence of a mixture adjustment post on the right hand carb. Evil or Very Mad

before shelling out a lot of money on a second hand set, even if I could find a decent set I figure I may as well have a go at repairing it.

Broken post clamped in position.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12079571_10153167468174013_4855658593037595835_n_zpstgflyykv.jpg

Next fettle a slot around the break to give a good key and help form a solid joint.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12033099_10153167468169013_3823839862704519567_n_zpsc3pvjor5.jpg

Now it was time to break out the chemical metal.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12065652_10153167467984013_4025024550754919150_n_zpshfs9mb9t.jpg

Let it set, sand back and paint blank.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/11048715_10153167467974013_4018250028408622967_n_zpspcufaaj2.jpg

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12094884_10153167467994013_2480269987532587787_o_zpsruh3mltr.jpg

Pretty tidy Thumbs Up

Pop the spring in, nip the adjusting screw up.......

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12079427_10153167473339013_861257924590509926_n_zpso1qniozx.jpg

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Mad Mad Sad Middle Finger

so only one thing for it.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12079276_10153167489629013_2096902426518011789_n_zpsattmt5w8.jpg

LOTS of chemical metal, not so pretty but effective.

Its not stayed like this, you can see it sanded back in the next post. once the carbs are back together I will spray it black and hopefully it won't be too noticeable.

The wads of Chemical Metal didn't hold out.

https://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/bladeblaster/12144844_10153174433809013_6289298718813851307_n_zpsoifnat9t.jpg

So time for plan C

Got a set of A8 carbs off Ebay. These later ones are restricted with smaller jets, so going to swap out all the jets & needles from the A1 carbs.
