Great bike!
Will be watching this thread with interest as these sort of R1 of it's day type bikes really appeal to me now instead of some current litre bike shit that's overpriced and not relevant to road riding.
I hope once you've fettled it and got it sorted that it rides really well too! I love my classic shit these days, and this bike was the one that toppled the 110bhp Air cooled 1100 dinosaur's forever!

I liked them when they came out and I still like them now.
Wrong colour , should be red, cos they go faster ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

Very very nice!
Looks very clean and original, how many miles has it done?
Probably a very numb question but what are those things on front of the forks opposite the calipers?

Thanks all.
The anti dive units are the big hideous lumps on the front of the forks. One of those brilliant on paper, rubbish in the real world, motorcycle innovations. The front brakes divert into the anti-dive units and operate a small piston, so when you break some of the lever pressure is used to close the piston in the anti-dive unit, this restricts oil flow in the forks making them harder, and this reducing dive. That's the theory, in practice it makes the front brakes shit, and knackers up the handling.
Its actually quite far from original, its the wrong colour scheme for the year, its an A5 colour scheme, this is an A1 model. Wrong mirrors, mini indicators on the back end. The fork bottoms shouldn't be polished, the callipers have been badly painted, and there are a few non-standard bodges under the skin too. In honesty nothing that can't be rectified, but its surprising how non-standard and pretty standard looking bike can be once you get into details.
Its actually done 55k miles, although cosmetically it is pretty nice, mostly due to the respray its had at some point. Its had new fastners all round the bodywork too. Shame they didn't pay more attention to a few other things, like the correct spacers in the forks, and bothering to fit dust seals in the brake callipers. Still you can't have it all I guess.
At the moment the plan is just to get it running properly and MOT'd, then then get some use out of it, before the gritters come out.
I could flip it and make a tidy profit, but this is a keeper. |

Apparently the Top Gun bike was originally a black 900. The film producers added the red band which makes it look like the 750, which was never available in the US. The Kawasaki badges were removed because Kwak wouldn't provide free bikes www.imcdb.org/vehicle_6406-Kawasaki-GPZ-900-R.html
Cruise is 5'7" and McGillis is 5'11", so in some scenes Cruise had 3" lifts in his boots. In this pic you can see his foot is angled way up as if he is on tip toes:
