I seem to have a slight metallic grind from the front wheel of my 2003 SV650.
It's not continuous so I thought it might be the discs or pads.
But it doesn't seem to make the noise when rolling the bike (which I have to do every morning down a slope for 20 feet or so). It only makes the sound when its in gear.

Throttle/ speedo sensor?
If so, can I oil it all up to get it running freely? Would Chain lube spray or 3in1 be ok?

Your help and wisdom as always, much appreciated.

Check the bearings.

I don't see how it can possibly be coming from the front wheel if it only happens when in gear. There is nothing in the front wheel directly connected to the engine or transmission. Even a spedo sensor would still be turning with the bike in neutral.

Does it do it if you roll down the slope in gear with the clutch pulled in?

I'd suggest it's more likely to be either speed related (so a noise coming from the front wheel at higher speeds) or coming from elsewhere (chains are good at making grinding noises).

You need to get the front of the bike supported to get the wheel off the ground.
Spin the wheel slowly to try to determine if noise from bearing of brake pads.

It is unlikely anything to do with the gear as there is no connection between the front wheel and the transmission.

Brake pads are always in contact with the brake disc. They are just not pushing on the disc. There is sometimes a harmless scraping sound when the bike is moved.

Wheel bearing failure would be less likely than brake pad issues.

It is possible to collect small stones in brake disc perforations which could 'grind'.

It is a bit of priority to find out what is causing it as a sudden lock-up of the front end can end in potato or cabbage (if going really fast at the time of lock-up).

A wheel bearing that's on it's way out can sound completely normal at a walking pace and utterly horrendous as a driving pace. Check for any play in the bearing by sitting in front of the bike, front wheel clear of the ground, grip the top and bottom of the tyre and try and move it left and right between the forks. Any movement whatsoever means a bearing's worn out.

I've had bikes with loads of miles on them but only ever changed bearings as preventive maintenance because the wheels are off for tyres and the bearings are cheaper than the phaph of having to do them later if they fail. Easy for +30k miles on good bearings.
A 12yr old bike may now need bearings though.

Totally forgot to mention that it was MOT'd less than a month ago.
Would they have checked the front bearings then?
Advert stated new pads front and back as well.

Bloody week off and its raining ALL week.

Got the bearings checked. No problems.
Noise continued and took it out for a 100 mile run this morning.
Got back and was checking over the front and saw a completely worn part of the tyre. A band of wear, down to the wear bars on the right side of the tyre. Not on the edge, that has grip, but approx 45 degrees from the centre. Worn all the way around.
Took the carbon fender extender off as the back of the screws were sticking out the inside! Can't see that this was rubbing or that anything else is rubbing.
An taking it to get the tyre changed and check the wheel balance tomorrow. Was crapping myself that the front was going to go bang and throw me over on the way home. Did about 50mph tops.
