I have an f2 rc42 1993 and had issues with the alternator drive chain tensioner failing the problem seems to be that you have to completely strip the engine to replace this! has anyone any knowledge of this job? it would be good to know if its at all possible to do without a strip down.
I have emailed Honda for advice but not holding my breath

Mine's been rattling like a bastard for a decade.... when it STOPS rattling, then I think I might have a problem!! So till then... finger's crossed!

Actually quietens down when I switch the headlamp on... maybe that's the answer Wink

No Haynes manual for this model; but it's essentially a variant of the US Market CB750 Night-Hawk... wheels, and brakes, and bodywork are different, but it's the exact same engine, and frame; just got longer shocks at the back and shorter forks at the front, to de-Americanise it... SO the American Clymar manual, that is available, could be pretty handy...

Anyway; alternator chain rattle; it's an engine out job, and its a bit of a bugger to get that engine out. There's a knack to it, you have to sort of 'roll' it diagonally... once out, I believe that the tensioner, that is only about £50, from Dave-Silvers, who now handle all spares for older Honda models Honda UK don't want making the franchise dealers look untidy...

If its only the tensioner thats at fault, then I believe it can be replaced simply dropping the sump off the lump... which MAY be possible without taking the engine out the frame... but it's a tight old hole it's in....

If it's the chain itself stretched beyond what the tensioner can handle... THEN the crank-cases have to be split, to loop the chain off the crank... and a can of worms with t'other chain for cams, and disturbing the main-bearings....

Hence finger's crossed! Its half a full engine rebuild to sort it out; and in for a penny, in for a pound, might as well do a full recon on it... if not, might as well leave it alone, and run it till it dies!, and get another.

Which was my original inclination when I bought mine ten years back; though old dawg's sort of grown on me, and I might have to re-think that, notion at some point, I'm not so sure, now, that I could let it 'die'... but still...

hi thanks for that my friend has a Honda dealership but they don't do bikes now just quads so don't have this issue but he said the same just run it till it goes !! but I carry my son and GF on as pillion and wouldn't like to think what would happen if it went bang at speed so I investigated the problem which is the self adjusting part of the tensioner the tiny spring came out so the tensioner doesn't hold in place so I drilled a hole and tapped it put a bolt in through and it pushed the tensioner body up against the chain I then welded it in place but after 2 years of it only slightly rattling the weld came away and it rattled again!
I would gladly renew the tensioner its £49 from david silver and has only 3 bolts of which only 1 is accessible from below after removing the clutch to get the oil pump out I am going to remove the old fix and replace with a new bolt and try and get the weld right this time its hard with all the oil soaked bits inside there
