5jj R1 electrical issues

Hi all.

Recently picked up a 2000 r1. Have ridden it a few times with nothing amiss. A few days ago though i noticed the electronic dash and lights took a while to come on after turning the ignition. All i got was a neutral light. Indicators were also much dimmer. The bike started and ran fine, and the dash and lights came to life a short time after. This problem repeated itself the next time i rode it, but the dash and lights took longer to come on. I was riding for 5 minutes before they came to life. Just been out for a ride, no problem on initial start up, dash and lights were fine, bike started no problems. Pulled up for a break, tried to restart the bike and again, no dash or lights, and the bike wont turn over.

The previous owner had not had much use out of the bike so he says, so could it be a duff battery? The internet seems to suggest a bad connection, inclined to agree as sometimes the bike is fine, sometimes not. Any ideas?

Try battery. Also check the reg rec connector for corrosion. Also under left panel between fairing and headstock, little removable one, massive white connector block. Check it.

As Paddy has suggested,the large white multi-pin connector under the left side of the top fairing can cause quite a few problems,especially if the chassis connector has gone green and rotten

I have seen this corrosion on quite a few early R1s now.

Also,check the multi-pin connector going onto the rectifier/regulator that is on the front of the battery box.I made up a heat sink from some spare ally plate that I had available and this helps to keep the heat dissipated by the rect/reg away from the battery

Instead of using the connector on my 5JJ I soldered some spade connectors directly onto the r/r so that there would be no further problems after the +ve feed burnt out and damaged my r/r.I then filled the gaps with waterproof silicone

Thanks for the informative post. If the +ve connector is fried is the reg rec knackered?

Battery is at 11.8V, up to 13.5 when running.

Obviously the battery isnt charging. Suggests to me the reg/rec is knackered. Connectors look ok, i dont have any tools here at my girlfriends place so couldnt get a proper look. Am i on the right lines here?

If you have the multimeter handy,select resistance check and connect between the -ve post and a good chassis point.The meter should show zero ohms.Try several places keeping one probe on the -ve battery post.Any reading higher than zero ohms may well suggest a bad or corroded earth connection.

The battery is part of the charging circuit.When the internal resistance of this item changes the charge rate also changes.

Do you have an Optimate type charger?As the colder weather approaches the battery has more to do to get the engine started.

13.5 if lights are on seems fine. The 11 sounds utter shit. Would suggest a new battery.

Got myself a new battery and reg/rec on the way. the 13.5 running was without lights but at 5k rpm. I tried to get the bike home yesterday. Bumped it to start, got about 20 miles then lost my lights and the bike cut out. So suspect there may be a bit more to it than just a duff battery?

Ding ding! Two of the contacts in the reg/reg connector have clearly overheated, melting the plastic. There is corresponding damage to the contacts on the reg rec itself.

I have a new reg/rec fitted, just waiting for a battery. Question is, do i need a new connector too? Although you can see in the picture the plastic is melted, the contacts look ok. Tempted to go down the soldering route when i have a chance, but for now, will this connector work?

The saga rumbles on. Replaced the battery and reg rec and all has been well for a couple of weeks. I have noticed however that the big white connector block mentioned above is melted on one connection, as is the wire coming into it. This is causing me to intermittently lose my lights and dash. Is this likely to be a short?

It's the black wire that's melted. Anyone got a wiring diagram, or can tell me what this wire does? There is similar melting on the other side of the connector.
