PostPosted: 10:50 - 09 Oct 2015    Post subject: Feedback on an app idea Reply with quote

Second post as i'm new to this forum. I have an idea which i would like to get some feedback on.

I have been riding for a year or so, sometimes in more remote places, and sometimes solo. It can be a little worrying if you don't have great mechanics skills or experience to deal with incidents. So I was thinking about putting together an app for reporting biker incidents, such that other connected or local people can provide solutions. Incidents might cover small issues such as being lost or sick; technical issues such as punctures, fuel or failure; gear related problems; health concerns; or more serious things like theft, injury or other emergency.

Would this be of use to people? It might also be used for group rides so people can communicate within the group but ride separately..

thank in advance..

If I'm in a spot of bother I'm not sure I'd want an app broadcasting that fact to anyone who's listening. I want to be able to get myself out of trouble as easily and discreetly as possible, not send up a bat-signal.

Essentially I want to know where is my closest:
- Petrol station
- Hotel
- Mechanic
- Doctor / A&E / Dentist
- Supermarket
- Towing company
- Taxi firm

In reality, in the UK, I've never found myself in a position that AA membership, cable ties and a credit card haven't been able to solve.

I think there's something that exists already like this mate...

I think it's called BCF or something?

Finger pausing over ratings OK because I'm firing blanks, it's actually not an insane idea. Sort of a Grindr for HALP MA BIKE DID ASSPLODE.

However, I can see a couple of problems.

0) Non geographical advice sources are available. PORE WATUR ONIT KWIK!!!

1) In low density areas you've very unlikely to find anyone nearby who's using it.

2) In high density areas you've very likely to be in London which is full of Londoners.

I guess you could pimp it round the MC and MCCs and get the respect honor brother knights of the scene on board. Thinking

I few months ago in the deepest depths of Suffolk, I found my self in urgent need of fuel.

No problem, Google Maps will help... Oh noes it wont! No signal!

Mobile Apps are limited by their signal coverage, no signal, no help. Unless of course you can pre-plan and cache the data for an area and rape your data plan if not on Unlimited/WiFi...

Yes no signal is obviously a limitation but then you wouldn't even be able to call the AA or family etc.

As for broadcasting, it could be limited to people you know and trust. If there's no one you know in the area, you could choose to broadcast locally. Your location would only be given if you trust the solution offered, which maybe just advice or an actual visit by a nearby 'nice person' with a foot pump, fuel etc.

I don't think it's very useful in the city but more intercity, although if well designed and has good 'traction' it could be used in the city in future. There could be bikers living in a nearby village, or a passing friendly cager who has the app could assist. Bikers on the move might not be alerted in time...

I think when riding with a group that splits up it could be useful for communicating rest stops, problems etc. ?

This isn't solving anything new though, Whatsapp can broadcast a message to a group and it's already well-established.

Why would I want to have a phone alert every time some retarded kid's nicked ped breaks down.... Or broadcast my woes to every scrounging pikey in the area....

Autoaid - £38 for me and my spouse in any vehicle we are likely to be in (excludes shitty tiddlers/mahoosive trucks). Last time I used them, I didn't have to pay and claim back, they said it was covered. They also didn't nick my car.

Good point, maybe not so useful in that case unless it made the whole trip easier somehow. Just to be clear though, this would be a free thing with no intrusion on privacy.

I was reading the blood biking thread in this forum and it seems to me this kind of app might facilitate that sort of thing too.

So the idea is an app that relies on having lots of users who also have the app. A motorcycle based social network.

Or you could just go and join one of the many groups of facebook which doubtless already try to do this sort of thing.

Or you could just do what everyone else does when they break down, and call breakdown/friends/family or emergency services if it hurts.

If you want to find out where your closest shop/petrol station/pharmacy is, you just google it.

Yeh, I just don't think it's a bad idea to make this *easier* for bikers, especially when you are outside your 'comfort' zone. Easier is of course subjective Smile

Beat me to it. Seriously though, there's always a few people nosing around BCF 24/7, and if you're really in the shit you've always got 999.

Because of course everybody benefits when cagers are checking their phones on the move.

If we sound cynical, it's because every few months someone pops in demanding that we complete some badly thought out "survey" that turns out to be just shilling their genius app that will revolutionise biking because of reasons.

Can't say I've ever seen one materialise yet.

Be different: don't ask, show.

I don't mind people coming in and asking for comments like OP did. Once in a blue moon there will be a gem that no one else has thought up.

It's the twats that are convinced they are onto a winner and just expect us to endorse it I object to.

Nobody else seems to see the benefit of this, but I think it's quite a good idea. I live right where the M1, M62 and M621 meet so I could probably help quite a few people if this took off. Sometimes just need somebody nearby with a 19mm spanner or whatever that's not in your normal tool kit.

Haha i'm starting to realise bikers can be quite opinionated and critical - or maybe that's just The Internet Smile

It seems even calling 999 isn't a guarantee of rescue. I have a feeling a backup is a 'good thing'! Case in point? https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/county-border-motorbike-crash-victim-left-in-ditch-for-three-hours-amid-police-confusion-10515103.html

How would your app help in such a situation as that?
