I failed my Mod 1 this week. 1 single stupid mistake of looking to hard at the white line while doing the u turn, combined with going a little to slow meant my foot went down! Gutted!

I am back to looking at 125s again now and thinking about some of these bigger looking ones. The Hyosung GT125R and Daelim Roadwin or a Varadero if one comes about cheap enough.

it was lucking that I hadn't bought anything yet, I was going to look at a 1999 CB600 on the weekend and nearly bought a 1994 CB500 a few weeks ago. But I don't think I can wait much longer, so probably get a 125 to get through the winter commute and have a bit more practice...

Just thought I would finally post and say Hello. "Hello!"

its never too late in the year.
Only just passed Mod1 and 2 myself.
Had you asked me in August i'd have only been on my CBT.
Things change, if you want to go for the full test, carry on and don't worry about a small mistake.

If you think you;d prefer a 125 in winter, low speed but small tyres, then thats fine. You're the one riding it, not us who'll comment from our own viewpoint.

Do what YOU think is best.

I am still going to do my Mod 1 and Mod 2. My resit is booked for the 7th, but I need to commute to work which is the time constraint, winter is coming and my wife could do with the car for the school run. Its going to probably be late Nov before I can do my Mod 2.
Skinny tyres is one of the reasons I was looking at the bigger 125s, also my commute will either involve the a470 so i would prefer a bike that could do 70 or Caerphilly Mountain, which I think bikes like the ybr and cg will struggle to get up.

Winter commute, NSL, mountains?

Car.

Far more around to choose from, cheap, easier to sell in winter when you pass.

No 11kW 125 is going to handle steep hills.

Wouldn't the Verydearo cope with hills?

Mine seemed quick in its day, then I again I never took it to the hills

Agreed. This is one of the worst things about being stuck on a 125 for me.

I don't even have any particularly steep hills where I stay, but even the slightest of inclines will drop the speed.

What 125 do you have?

This is the reason I was looking at the 125 twins rather than the singles.

I've got a Kymco k-pipe. So admittedly, it is one of the smaller 125's around (and is a single). There are 125's which would cope a lot better with hills than mine, but none of them will do it with out a bit of a push (dependent on the hill).

If you really want a bike, I'd honestly wait if I was you and get my license finished so you can ride a bike with a decent bit of power. Because I can tell you now, when you've ridden that 125 for a few days, you'll be craving those extra CC's Razz

I considered an nsr or rs 125 restricted and the de restrict it when I pass. Not sure if they are commuters though.

As winter is coming the bike is likely to be used solely for commuting for a few months until the weather gets better

As Rogeborg said car is your better option for winter in the mountain. You cannot commute on ANY bike when there is snow.

Some time ago I needed cheap car for the winter. I bought old Vauxhall Vectra with 9 months MOT for £125. I sold it 6 months later for £150.

Car is out of the question, plus the running cost of a bike are cheaper. If I was to go down the car route I would have to fix my car and not get my bike licence or a bike.

I have my eye on 2 varaderos at the moment and possibly a daelim roadwin. There is a Hyosung GT125R a little further a field that I will keep an eye on this week.

Why not look at the crossers, xt125 etc, better in the snow, lighter on build better visibility. I did a winter on a ybr, no prob on NSL roads, as long as you stay in the slow lane.. 200miles on a tank rocked, being stuck behind trucks with trucks tailgating me in the wet sucked.. Another 250 cc max for over 24's with licence and cbt vote.. Anyway get a bike, you'll come out of winter stronger for it Thumbs Up gl Thumbs Up

If you insist on 2 wheels and 125cc, I'd get a scooter for that purpose. PXC125 or similar + Tucano gear (Urbano muffs, Termoscud invalid blanket) and tough it out until spring.

I'd have a look at some derbi 125s, sendas are great on and off road and pretty tall so great in traffic. And cheap as chips too

A larger contact patch does not mean more grip. Big bikes have wider tyres because with a smaller contact patch the rubber would overheat or shear. Particularly in the rain, a higher ground pressure narrow tyre aquaplanes much later than a wide tyre.

Muffs and other warm things for winter are the way to go. A 125's feeble alternator probably won't do heated grips and charge your batter and run your headlight, although oxford make low powered scooter grips. However if it's proper cold, you can have bars that are too hot to hold whist freezing the backs of your hands and finger tips.

Whilst proper massive winter gloves are available, they can get too big to be comfortable. I have some BKS winter gloves and can barely move my hands in them.

Winters have been pretty mild lately, almost to the point I didn't notice it was winter last year. (Touch Wood)

I have been looking for crossers, but there not many around at the moment. I am thinking of getting something cheap and then change after Christmas once I passed my tests. So I have looked at the chinese stuff too.

found a haotun 125 for about 500 quid. But i will keep looking.

hi,
varadero will be fine. ideal imho.
"big bike" feel, heavy & slow (only compared to the 2t's im used to) but enough power to get you up most hills.
good upright seating position too, ideal winter commuter imho.
I only had 1 for 6months but its the ONLY 125 4 stroke I'd consider.
proper honda build quality, not like their indian/asian cheap commuters.
forget the hyosung gt/r, you dont want that sports bike seating position on an underpowered, heavy (very heavy) 125 4t, especially when you drop it, break something & find you cant get parts for it Smile

cheers,
GAZ

Haotian? HT125-8 (Vixen) or 4F (Arrow)? Reasonable enough but pay the absolute minimum that you can.

Really benefits from going up a tooth or two on the front sprocket but even at that they're not going to set your crotch on fire.

As it happened I was a bit desparate for transport and low on funds so on an impulse buy to sort my transport issue I bought a Lexmoto Street 125 thats 2.5 years old.

Its not the quickest but having used it work work this week I found it more than capable in the traffic and it was actually a Clio slowing me down up the hill! Happily sits at around 60-65 and light enough to push up my path to the garden.

It will do the job for now, spend an hour servicing it yesterday and fitting new front pads for less than 30 quid!

On a plus note, I passed my Mod 1 yesterday morning and have booked my Mod 2 for the end of the month. Smile
