a pretty poor effort by normal bike standards i think you'll agree, but this was no normal bike, i collected my scooter back this evening, and rode it home 102 miles, down pitch black A roads, in the pissing rain, with a candle for a light...

and i had a great time, was the best ride in ages Very Happy

strange breed these 2 wheel machines, isnt it odd, how you can go out for a ride with the best intentions, nice barmy summer evening, nothing but a wallet with petrol money, a bike, and a pair of earplugs, and yet you can come back bored, frustrated certain you would be happier now if you hadnt bothered, and yet a slow 45mph trek for 3 hours in the pissing rain down dank roads with cars abusing your behind can be such a blast

i'll never understand.....if i did, maybe i'd be able to work out what bike would be best for me, as im sure i havent figured it out yet

but long may two wheels remain such a pleasing mystery, all faith seems restored....for the time being anyway Thumbs Up

All the best

Glad you enjoyed it Goose - I probably would have said "balls to it" at the end of my road, but hey!

Quick for something that big.

It'll never hit that speed, mind. If it does it won't for long.

Sorry for going OT. Not much of an improvement considering the old Centaur/Bulwark carriers could (in theory) do 28 knots, and they'd dwarf Invincible.

Hi

I suspect that in reality the Invincible class are probably a touch faster when they need to be.

All the best

Goose, do they still have the same regulations they did when I was still in a couple of years back, restricting most of the fleet to 14 knots due to a lack of fuel?

I guess 'vince and her sister ships would be exempt due to flying ops requirements anyway.

As to rattling the deckplates, I've only been on the Illustrious, but it managed to crank out 29 knots in a thursday war without too much vibration. After pitching around on 'sweepers and P2000s, it was a pleasure to stand on a floating carpark that barely registered a sea state 5!

ive seen 27 knots on the log quite a few times, so i guess there arent any fuel restrictions in place anymore

but i think thats about tops, over 30 knots ive never experienced, and ive been on it through loads of operational conditions and exercises

reckon its just too old to cop it, rusty crate Mr. Green

Yes, but they are so big that you just need to fire a torpedo in roughly the right direction from a couple of hundred miles away and they only way you will miss is if something gets in the way.

Invincible was even smaller and slower than the Russian Kiev class (which was first mentioned about the same time in the mid 1960s, yet went into service in the mid 1970s and was struck off in 1993).

All the best

Couple of hundred miles away?! What kind of torps would that be?!

Very Happy I assume you were exaggerating for effect!

The Yank carries are 4 times the size and carry an air wing about 15 times as powerful as handful of poor old FA2s that can barely stagger into the air with a combat load if it's hot in the gulf!

The two new carriers we have been promised for years have yet to even reach the planning stage. Originally they were talking about 60,000 tonnes, but Brown is balking at the £10 billion cost of the ships and airwings, and so the MoD are starting to backpedal on the "Steel is cheap, Air is free" line they were originally touting.
