Hi,

I've sadly just pretty much given away my CBR at auction on eBay. However, the seller (probably a member here) wants to pay via Paypal and pick up the bike with a moving company.

Since I know there are always scams around, what precautions can I take?

The bike is at my sister's house as I am in Norway at the moment.

Thanks,
Antony

Do not sell your bike with paypal.

Ask for cash or no sale and get the money before the bike goes anywhere.

If they can't agree to that then tough no sale.

Thanks for responding. He can't come to pick up the bike, and says the moving comany can't carry cash?

As Monkeybiker said, don't accept paypal. There is nothing to stop them claiming they never received the item, and no way for you to prove otherwise as you can't send a bike recorded. And even if you can prove he has the bike, it could prove an almighty headache.

That's his problem.

Why would anybody buy a bike this way? Has he not seen it at all?

Don't worry about it. You already said it was a poor sale price so if he can't meet your terms then end the sale.

If it was me then unless the cash is in my hand the bike is going nowhere. Paypal is not acceptable.

Maybe. I did sell a bike via Paypal years ago, but actually rode the bike to the guy's house as it was local and watched him transfer the funds. Paypal withheld it for a couple of days to do some checks which had me worried but it went through.

This guy has a feedback score of 128 which is all positive - so pretty sure he's not there to scam me. However, good call. It isn't worth the risk and hassle. Cash it is. Thanks.

Could easily be a hacker taken over his account.

I'd consider cash paid into bank account at a bank branch. No way for paypal for anything significant in that situation.

Hi there , I have sold a few bikes on ebay , if the man wants to buy it with out seeing it then that is down to him , I have no problems with that as I put sold as seen..

You should say in your ad like , I always say cash on pick up will be fine Very Happy
If not and he arranges pick up then that's fine but I always say , I would like the cash in my bank account please..
You do not sound to happy by the way you have worded your post , you should have put a reserve on it m8..
If he tries just putting the money in your paypal just send it him back..
You should have just worded your ad a little bit better , you always get them on ebay m8..

Agree it sounds dodgy, the whole sending somebody to collect the bike malarkey.

Scam-bells ringing.

Cash or direct bank transfer.

Where's it going to, Nigeria? Laughing

Bank transfer. If he won't do that, then he doesn't have the money to buy it, or he's intended to diddle you.

Actually, if he hasn't already paid you a deposit to secure his bargain, then he's probably a fantasist and his man-in-a-van will never show up anyway.

Can you contact the other bidders and see if any of them want it for a sensible price?

Meanwhile, stick it on Gumtree, cash in hand or bank transfer, no cheques, PayPal, Bitcoins, XBoxen or Staffy puppies.

While the guy may be genuine, there are too many scams out there via the PayPal route of payment.

Personally, I would not touch.

I've bought and sold quite a few bikes on ebay and via Paypal and never had any problems. Bought my current one via Paypal and had a bike courier bring it up from Southampton. Just make sure the courier gets a signature on delivery and you shouldn't have any problems.

Apart from the funds being lifted from his account and signed for by a false name.

Bank transfer or cold hard cash. Nothing else.

The other option is to go through PayPal, but insist that it be transacted as a gift rather than as a sale. That way there is no recourse for them to spring a cashback on you.

Of course, that means you have to refrain from being a twat as well.

Bank transfer if he can't give you the cash. Paypal is a minefield.

As said, if he won't do that I would call scam.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. The bike should have sold for a little more, but does need a few expensive maintenance items for the next MOT (rear tyre, left front fork seal etc.) so the price is probably fair. Guess it's always a sad thing to see your bike go. Probably get an SP2 next year though. Recon this time round I've learnt to stop modding the damn things as you just lose money when you sell.

It seems Paypal has too many "ifs" so I'll go with the majority of the consensus here and say cash in hand or bank transfer. He hasn't gotten back to me today so we'll see. No loss if I have to relist it and perhaps make it more clear in the advert.

I could contact some other people who were interested, but I might just relist it and send them a message - and stick it on Gumtree as suggested.

I've had people try to scam me in the past so I'm a little wiser to it. However, have had a couple of bastards do the chargeback thing when it comes to work via Paypal so probably best not to give them a chance.

Thanks again.

Note that getting them to pay the money in in a bank branch should be safer than a bank transfer, which can still get reversed (but there does seem to be a lot less fraud in these cases than with paypal.)
Don't think they can reverse a cash payment.

Just because you have not been scammed does not mean it does not happen.

When selling a bike for possibly thousands of pounds I am not taking a risk with paypal.

I didn't say it doesn't happen I said that I have never had any problems. There appears to be a lot of paranoid people on here. If you are worried about ebay or Paypal then don't use either, simples.

Paypal? Moving company collect the bike? No no no no no!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care who collects it; you, a mate, a moving company or whoever else, it's all cool, they just need to bring the cash with them.

Or bank transfer.
Or bitcoin.
But NOT PayPal. Never PayPal. Shocked

Grayo, those 'paranoid people' seem to know a lot more about the in's and out's of PayPal transactions than you do. Maybe you could learn something.

When there are numerous examples of that not being the case.
You can still use ebay without paypal for selling vehicles within the rules of ebay, so there's no reason 'not to use either' because you don't like one.

What worries sellers with Paypal is this feeling that the funds can be taken from your account weeks, (or maybe months?), later if the buyer files some sort of complaint. I think Paypal need to balance buyer and sellers rights a bit more.

180 days. Shocked

PayPal Buyer Protection does not cover vehicles but I still have no interest in getting even slightly involved with any such potential headaches.

If it's something that's being collected in person then there's no need to involve some third party to handle the payment. You hand me the cash and I hand you the bike keys. Keep it simple.
