Good morning,

I'm very new to DIY scooter problems and I'm in need of some help please.
I bought a Chinese scooter, not yet 3 years old that when I bought it was running perfectly fine. It made some odd noise when at speed of more that 15m/h but that resolved with some WD40 around the wheels.
A few weeks back I went for a ride and 2 minutes in it stopped accelerating, once I turned the throttle the engine died.
I checked this site for support and figured it would be a problem with the carb, so I bought a new one and changed it. Only thing that was odd was the old carb was full of petrol. Anyways the change was easy beasy and the bike was running perfectly fine. I parked it and the next morning I wanted to go to work and I had the same problem.
On the old carb I was messing with the idle screw to see if it made a difference but it did not.
So now I have no idea how to proceed. Any suggestions?

It's probably a problem with the fuelling, but that doesn't mean the carb's at fault. The float bowl at the bottom is supposed to be full of fuel.

It could be flooding (e.g. running rich or the choke is stuck on) or starving for fuel (e.g. a problem with the fuel tap or a vacuum pipe).

You'll want to get the spark plug out and have a look at the tip colour.

Carbs are not an item that require replacing*. Would you buy a new Car because the old one was dirty.

There is NOTHING odd about a Carb being full of petrol, that is how they work. Take it to someone who know what they are doing it will probably be cheaper for you in the long run.

*OK in some instances they can wear and it need replacing/resleeving however a chinky scooter doesn't stand much chance of getting to that kind of mileage.

It sounds as though there may well be an air leak around where the carb mounts onto the engine.

With the engine running, spray some WD40 around that area where between the carb and its mounting. If the engine revs change then there may well be a gasket that is damaged and letting in to much air.
