Hi. I've had my A2 for over two years now so want to go unrestricted via progressive access. I'm got an insurance policy on my bike that covers riding other bikes. On my insurance my license is also stated as a full license since when I took it out there was no distinction between A2 and A etc. I've already got my mod 1 pass certificate, I took the test on a friends bike that is big enough for the test (he dropped me to the centre). I'm more concerned about being correctly insured for the mod 2 so thought I'd check that I am actually insured to ride his bike? He's got a fully comp policy too if that makes any difference.

Alternatively, I already bought myself a CBR600F which is waiting for me to pass, but would I be insured on that if I could insure it in my own name, get it to the test centre and strap some L-plates on?

Your age?

Remember that cover for a bike that is not yours is only 3rd party. So bin the bike and you will be paying for the repairs to his bike. No matter if he has FC or not....

Personally I would ring your ins co and ask them if you would be covered riding your own bike on the test.

Did you pass your test before or after Jan 2013?

If before your restriction simply expires 2 years from the date of your test and you crack on riding anything you like.

If the latter then you do need to do the test to hop up to un-restricted.

You'll need to check that your insurance does cover you to ride a higher powered bike than your own on test - legally you're fine as you're under instruction/supervision but your insurance might refuse to cover the 'risk'

I'm 21. Aware that I'm responsible for damages. Think I can manage a mod 2 without crashing tbh, just want to be legally covered. The thought of trying to explain how I have a full license but am doing a test to an insurance call centre operator pretty awful which is why I am asking here haha.

My policy states I'm covered to ride bikes I do not own with the owners permission, with no mention of power or size. So from this I'd assume I am covered?

I wouldn't worry about it personally, the test only takes 40 minutes maximum so there's not much risk of damage to the bike.

If you're uncertain, go through a local training school. They'll have everything you need.

He won't be riding otherwise in accordance as he shall be under instruction

However, DVSA Derek will want sight of a specific insurance policy for sure

I would check the General exclusions to ensure there are no age limits on this. As Car's more of than than not have a age limit of 25 before you can drive other car's.
If you really want to risk getting to the test center only to find that the tester will not let you take the test.
You could hardly argue that BCF says its OK Embarassed

No exclusions that I can see. Surprised you think the tester would want to see my policy. He didn't for mod 1 (I know insurance is not as important as in mod 2) but anyway I would have thought it's not his concern as long as I tick the insured box.

You're fine. The wording on your certificate (and policy) means what it says - see Pryor vs GMP.

DVSA Derek might want to know how you got an A bike to the test centre. Mate rode it in. Look, there's Mate.

Display L plates front and rear, no ABS/OMFG CHECK ENGINE lights showing, pass, win.
