Has anyone got one, the sort of thing I can take into a team meeting and record say 2-2.5hours of people throwing idea's around and their views on different solutions to problems and ways of implementing stuff.

It needs to be small and compact so that I can do it covertly and get peoples real feelings on stuff, to analyse after and take views from people for future reference and to know which way to go with various projects etc.

I'm guessing I need something better than a smart phone, but what is good?

Have a look at something like the tascam DR05. Its £65 delivered and whilst it might not be the smallest thing in the world it is great quality and sensitive enough to pick out voices at the end of a board meeting table. If you want discrete then tape it under the table Wink it will auto level as required as its designed to do just as your asking ie record meetings as well as quality voice overs and backing tracks for video use. I'd rather stash that in a plantpot than some mini recorder that probably won't pick up half the voices if more than a couple of feet away

I recorded an hour long meeting on my phone, and the quality was fine. it picked up everyone and the table was quite long and i was at one end.

Not really on your question topic.

However, I'd think twice about covertly recording your team. I would certainly lose respect for a manager that covertly recorded me in a meeting.

Agreed.

Just put the recorder in the table in front of everyone. They'll quickly forget it's there.

I've used an Olympus digital dictaphone, cost about £50. Quality was much better than my phone and used easy to replace AAA batteries.

Last time I did this I used the voice memo app on my android phone and just sat the phone on the table.
