Hi I already have CCTV but wired and not great quality though it did get a conviction once when it caught an attempted break in to my shed. I'm thinking if going wireless with one of these IP Cameras that use home WiFi. Any advice appreciated and info on how it all gets set up.

Cheers

Not sure what the question is so some info from the ones I have set up .

The only ones I have done are either from Maplin or crap Foscams from eBay.

You usually just plug them into your router, find the cameras IP address, log in with generic password then set up its WiFi settings.

They work, but all have poor range. As in 3-5m. The stated range is only if completely unobstructed. Such as my last foscam worked with all doors including front door open. Shut all my doors and it kept cutting out from the WiFi. You can get extended range arials for most Foscams. I imagine if you set up your camera near a wireless router you would be fine, but we only have 1 wireless router in our small home and money has been tight this last year on buying a second router.

Both Foscams lasted about 18 months before developing an issue. For one it was the power plug on the camera, the other just kept resetting itself.

Other than that they pretty much work exactly the same as wired ones. Settings for quality of video and whether you want then to send a series of snapshots or record.

I wouldn't use wifi cameras at all. If I had bad intentions I'd just deauth your cameras repeatedly and carry out my evil plans while that was happening.

What is the distance? Your home wifi router is not designed for distance and better set up would be to buy separate video 5.8Ghz wireless sender/receivers. The cheap ones can cover over 100m with good transmission quality:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wireless-Transmitter-Receiver-Controlling-Satellite/dp/B012AVRDLU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_23_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1TKZ4SV3P041DTYXY9P7&dpID=51CyVkF87sL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_

Than you can buy any good resolution 1080p full HD wired cctv and plug it in the sender.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AcuraPRO-Panasonic-HD-SDI-VARIFOCAL-Infrared/dp/B00N15F0MY/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1445202481&sr=8-11&keywords=1080p+full+hd+cctv

Much cheaper set up with better quality and range than buying wifi camera.

You could even Telnet in to them. It only took me a few minutes to figure out the user/password combo for the Telnet that's enabled by default on my IP cam. Pretty easy to then just turn the camera off.

But realistically, how many typical bike thieves are capable of deauth or shutting it off via telnet?

Much easier for a yobbo to just take some spray paint or a hammer to it if they really don't want to be recorded.

I wouldent underestimate them, some of my smartest clients have criminal justice history's. They are very lazy though so I always advise do everything you can to slow down any attempts to get to the bike and makes sure its going to be a noisy process.

A script kiddie could start a deauth attack, all the tools are there and are simple to use. Although I agree your average "nick it and post pics on facebook" mong would probably have problems.
