Aamazing how clean the cars and bikes look. I would have imagined they'd be covered in dirt and various animals' doodoo by now.

Looks like we know the setting of Stalker 2....

It doesn't seem to be that bad in terms of contamination, nowhere near of Chernobyl magnitude.

Did you see the doco a few years ago about Chernoble and the villages around it?
The 'reporter' was advised not to go into the zone and not to eat or drink anything from the zone.
He got his radiation level measured before and after and was higher after he came out. Shocked

Probably not high enough to 'kill' but long-term cancers, leukaemia and birth defects probable.

There's some good stuff on the net, if you google "Pripyat". This was the town that was built for the workers of Chenobyl and their families, prior to things going tits up. They even do tours there now and although I imagine that it would be really interesting to visit, I'm not sure if I would.

Some bits of the zone are a lot worse than others, most of it is fine as long as you don't kick up dust and disturb the soil.

I saw a youtube vid of a girl taking an apple from the zone and putting it in a physicist-tier radiation detector (the sort of one you leave running for a week before the test to get an accurate background count) the apple was fine and she proceeded to eat it.

The same girl was playing around with her alpha-detector and found some chunks of reactor fuel (ejected in the explosion) just below the soil surface..... so if camping, I'd take a hammock.

Cancer caused by radiation won't be probable.

Increased risk of fatal cancer, due to radiation dose averages 5% per sievert dose to an individual, across a population.

A sievert is a huge dose of radiation. Four sievert received in a short time will give you acute effects (radiation sickness), maybe fatal.

It's not easy to get yourself a dose that makes cancer odds-on, without dying of acute effects first.

How could the reporter possibly suffer from birth defects? He's already been born.

I suppose because someone might have an interesting or discussion-provoking answer.

Your link makes a sensible point about the craze for speculative CT scans. Deliberate ionising radiation exposure should be avoided unless justified and optimised. Giving skinny kids a lower CT dose is an example of optimising.

So has anyone here ever heard of Hishashi Ouchi?

He was involved in a criticality accident in Japan, got quite nicely irradiated, and proceeded to basically turn into a Fallout ghoul. The doctors kept him alive for months, replacing various body functions with machines as they failed, while his body progressively turned into sludge.

There's some pics of him around on the net showing him in a pretty bad way, shame they didn't slot the poor fucker.

And that kids, is why we don't mix uranium solutions in buckets.... Rolling Eyes

Totally unethical and inhumane to let any living being suffer like that. They were obviously using the poor guy as a living science experiment.

I saw another documentary, about this scientist who lives in the zone, grows his own vegetables and fruits and is alright. He mentioned that some of the fruits and vegetables bind more radioactive cesium from the ground, but others nearly nothing. The most radioactive stuff that grows there are mushrooms. Also, they said that the only ''defected'' animals there where small birds, because they travel vast distances every year and the radiation takes their energy, so they don't have the strength to get back. And the gene pool gets fecked up over the years.

Coincidentally, I've read the news today, CZE, and people had mildly radioactive boar. They were making lunch for some investors in the Temelin nuclear power plant and when they carried the boar through the frame that measures radiation, they got alarm.
When the Chernobyl exploded, a rather considerable amount of radioactive cesium was spread all over the Europe. The mushrooms that grow in some parts of our country, bind the cesium from the soil that somehow got there, the boars eat it, then are mildly radioactive. They say there are a few places like that in the country, but nothing to worry about.

I don't know, but I'd take a bit of convincing that radiation is tiring the birds out.

To deduce that, just from a smaller number returning in spring, is a bit of a leap.

Fecked gene pool? Genetic effects probably never had a significant effect on fauna populations and effects will get less over time.

Yeah I've read that old Mr Ouchi (dat name doe) had his "chromosomes obiliterated" (may well just be creepypasta exaggeration), any doctor would know that with no chromosomes it's just a matter of time before you croak it as you can't replace lost cells.

+1 on the human experimentation too. I suppose it had been a while since WWII... wouldn't want to let an opportunity be wasted..... Shocked

The narrator said, that only the small migrant birds had defective fledglings, spots on the feathers, not enough feathers and bald places. But, coincidentally, there was also a word about other birds, that were doing just fine. The animals that stay in the zone, are doing better than those, that are in the ''populated'' areas. It was like the animals and plants were doing so great only because people left the place. This would make a huge nature reserve.

I can't find the doc. I was talking about, but there are quite a lot of docs. that are focused on the flora and fauna, not just the typical 'murican monster hunts.

Birds are likely to roost in the dirty old plant buildings and eat grit and drink out of storage ponds, so they can be more affected than other wildlife. The Sellafield pigeons were a notorious case, over here, although I think they were quite healthy.

Irradiation at the right stages of embryo or foetus development can certainly cause nasty birth defects, under lab conditions.

I'm cynical about radiation stories, but yeah that one could have legs (cue hilarity about five legged luminous crows, etc).

I don't understand your argument.
Are you saying radiation (Gamma, X-rays) doesn't have a negative effect on growth?

The theory that it is harmful is based on the effects ionising radiation has at a cellular level.
I don't believe there is any reasonable doubt that exposure to even low dose 'radiation' has a detrimental effect on living organisms.

Unless they've repealed some of the Laws of Quantum Mechanics. Smile
