Happy Monday to you all,

My Bandit 1200 (2003 – 25k) generally starts first time but if I leave it for 2 or more days, I.E. all weekend, then it goes to start but then kind of locks up.

From here I press the starter and it clicks but it’s like the engine is locked so it can’t turn over.

The only way around this is to put the bike in a high gear, turn the back wheel which seems to unlock everything then it starts fine.

When it does finally start after a lock up it blows a puff of fuel vapour out the front somewhere around the headers.

Any other time it starts fine as long as I don’t leave it over the weekend.

Any Ideas?

Clutch plates sticking? Or have you got oil leaking into the cylinders and it's making the engine harder to turn over / combination of that plus weak battery / old starter motor?

Could be something to do with Clutch. I've had two mechanics confirm a knocking sound emanating from the clutch. It only happens when it's not under load.

I had the clutch cover off last week but that's as far as I got because I didn't have a set of circlip pliers to remove the huge circlip holding everything in.

Got some circlip pliers on order so I'll go back in at the weekend and have a gander.

Cheers

No it is not the clutch !!

Starter clutch also is a very slim possibility

Is there an alarm fitted ??

I would check you leave the fuel tap on on or reserve NOT PRIME !!

Check battery terminals are tight

Then it get battery tested

Be very careful of deciding to strip starter motor there a 4 brush type and very hard to reassemble but should still be in good shape at 25k miles

as mentioned check the sprag clutch,
if it was anything more serious I doubt it would free up and allow you to ride the bike normally once started.
