Hi all, over the years of riding I've never worn ear plugs. Recently I was told I should as the wind damages your hearing.

What are your opinions, do you use ear plugs? Thumbs Up

As a new rider I've been wondering this too. My helmet isn't the most expensive (ls2) and I've been wondering if a better helmet would make a significant difference in reducing wind noise.

Any useful comments would be appreciated. I've not been a member long, so apologies if I've not read a thread from 6 months ago concerning this.

Yep, I wear these. You absolutely WILL cause hearing loss from wind noise if you don't protect your hearing, and it's irreversible.

Makes a difference but not sure significant. Even quite helmets are very noisy.

All the best

If your under 50mph your probably ok to go without, although I wouldn't really recommend it.
Your hearing is such a precious sense why risk it?

If you do any time on motorways you must wear earplugs. No ifs, no buts, no coconuts.

I use "no noise" they aren't too expensive. Many earplugs are designed to let mid frequencies through so you can hear talking and General noise but the low wind buffeting is greatly reduced. On a motorway with all that wind noise you aren't going to hear someone beeping at you anyway.
The cheap disposable foam ones are pretty good, or you can go pro and spend a couple hundred quid on moulded ones with earphones built in.
I use a Sena Bluetooth unit in my helmet too and with that turned up to max babbling an audio book at me and directions, on the motorway at er... Ehem... 70mph I can't imagine going without earplugs I'd be stone deaf by now.

I always wear them, doesn't feel right without them knowing you could be causing damage.

Saying that, no matter what I did with my ear plugs today they just were not having it.

In the end after 15 minutes of faffing I only managed the left one in and the right one I just left hanging there as a 'fuck you, I tried' in anger.

My right ear hole seems to be a right twat to ever get them in. Might investigate these mouldable custom jobbies because my gear up time is starting to take the piss now! Thumbs Up

Laughing CaNsA Which 125 for a tall rider?

I got myself some ear plugs but forget to wear them mostly. I'm already halfway deaf from gas turbines from my younger days.

To OP use ear plugs.

Just to help you in the future:
It's quite noisy -- in fact it's loud.
It's not very noisy -- in fact it's quiet.

if you value your hearing, wear ear plugs.

Moldex ear plugs reduce noise by 35db which i've used for the past 10years, I'm currently trying Howard Leight ear plugs which reduce noise by 37db and the noise reduction is noticeable the only down side is the foam is a little more dense which makes them slightly more uncomfortable.

Get them on eBay, usually 20pairs for £3-4

I've never used them, nor seen any other biker in the car park shove a pair in.

I worked in a press shop for 3 years and never saw anyone wearing ear prtection even though the noise could be pretty severe. Mind you, the foreman, who'd been there about 35 years was stone deaf. Nah...industrial deafness had yet to be invented then and men were men.....even if slightly hard of hearing. I can't say that I know of anyone becoming deaf from riding bikes....anyone else?

Chances of you becoming deaf are slim, chances of you developing tinnitus are high.
I don't see why increasing the risk of getting tinnitus makes you more of a man.

Either way the choice is yours.
