I have been playing around with insurance quotes and I see no difference in insurance cost whether you get a security devices such as smart water, data tag, alpha dot. I have been trying with kawasaki er6n, er6f, yamaha xj 6, suzuki sfv 650 gladius motorbikes. Why is it, and shouldn't it bring the premium down. Neutral [/b]

Consider what you'd have to spend on approved security devices to get a reduction in your insurance premium though?
Also not all insurers like the same products or recognise their worth.

If a bike is going to be left out and a about in places, then absolutely nothing will replace a good comprehensive insurance premium, and id rather spend more money on that, than on fancy locks and security devices. All any of the devices are good for is being a deterant and all can be bypassed with tools or know how.

Electronic tracking is possibly the only thing that might be useful on an expensive bike to trace where it's gone and have some chance of locating it. But then again it's not going to be joy riding scum that nick a 12K bike, and the people that can and would, would have such a machine stripped down to parts within 12hours of it going IMO.

For home use using more security devices is fine, and if it makes you feel safer or sleep better that's a good thing. But out and about id want a good insurance policy and a cheap lock and not the other way around!

You don't need to use large bold text. Wink

Smart Water, Datatag and Alphadot aren't going to stop your bike being nicked.

Sure, there's a very very slight chance that should it be stolen, the security markings will lead to some or all of the bike being recovered but basically, they're worthless.

Could be that both thieves and insurers have figured out that Plodforces aren't equipped for or bothered about searching for various types of marking on stolen-recovered bikes or parts.

Scotplod couldn't even tell me how many bikes are stolen, let alone how many they recover and identify via security markings.

Also true south of the border.

Insurance companies probably have more accurate statistics as to how effective security devices are, based on actual claims - but probably only offer any sort of discount if they have an arrangement with a particular brand.

Some years ago, I bought a car that already had a Tracker fitted from new, with the option of taking-over the contract. Only Churchill and Admiral offered a discount on the insurance, but the cheapest of those, was still £200 more than the quote I got from Octogon, who didn't offer a discount.

I would imagine that treating a bike to 'Smartwater', 'Datatag', etc. is not going to be very effective against the typical joyrider who either can't read, doesn't know what it is, or just doesn't care.

My view is you invest in security to stop it getting pinched - anything that's after the event is already too late; you wouldn't want it back, would you?

As for insurance - unless it's saving you a significant amount, I'd always declare no security whatsoever. If you declare security, you'll have an endorsement added to make it a condition precedent to liability that all declared security devices are in effect when unattended. Not quite so convenient when you 'forget' your disc-lock when popping to the shops.

I wonder if there was a temporary drop in professional thefts when AlphaDotTag first appeared, but now the gangs have figured out that it doesn't make a blind bit of difference.

Pure speculation, because I haven't found numbers. Feel free to FOI your local Copsquad, you may have better luck.

This is going to be another newbie asking a single question and then doing one, isn't it?

I disagree. Having had my scooter nicked last year, I was glad to get her back a few days later. They had smashed the bodywork on her to get to the ignition, but hadn't managed to start it up - still had a full tank of fuel and I doubt the little shits would have had the courtesy to fill 'er up before dumping it in a bush or wherever it was found. In the end, cost me a weekend and a few hundred quid in replacement panels to get it back to new. This is opposed to an insurance claim, loss of NCB, and then paying the difference between the £1700 current value and a £2600 new value. Yeah I know there is gap insurance etc etc, but the point is that it would have worked out expensive either way.

My new CBR has a tracker on it, and it gives me a great deal of peace of mind. I'm sure professional crooks would find a way round it pretty quickly of course, but it sends me a text should the bike be taken out of a 2m GPS fence. I'd be in my car and after the scum in a flash should it get lifted regardless of what the police were up to. However quick they are to locate the tracker I reckon I would have a good chance of getting to them first. I also just don't want my bike stolen. Been there, got the t-shirt. I'd rather have it back and the knowledge that some scumbag isn't getting a payday.

As for the original question - I don't know if it made a difference to my insurance premiums. Keen readers of these boards know I paid a small fortune anyway. I have data tag, HISS immobiliser, Almax 19mm immobiliser chain and tracker. I also put an alarmed disc lock on her if I am going away for the weekend or something. Oh yeah, and that anchors an oxford bike cover. If they get through all that I give up...

My insurance man advised me not to declare any locks etc as it wouldn't affect the premium and if it did get pinched I would have to then prove that the lock was on the bike. Another way they could get out of paying if it wasn't recovered.
