Hi I'm looking to team up with my mate online playing Age of Empires. Can anyone recommend a decent team chat software? We just need the basics?

cheers

For basics, this works well and has been going for aeons.

Skype is ok, but mic is on all the time, so sucks.
Mumble and teamspeak need the use of servers.

For simple client to client, Roger Wilco is great, no need to install any server software and no costs.

No I dont hate teamspeak, I'm on it now.

I may like cansa and his rhetoric, but I would avoid at all costs giving him any personal details for any purposes at any time, unless bacon and cellotape is given in tribute.

Which AOE do you play?

Me and my bro play once a year for the past 15 odd. When he comes up for a couple of weeks at Christmas, the 8+ hour battles commence on the LAN.

He's highly offensive and I'm defensive, so it can make for interesting battles. He likes to relentlessly attack and I dig in with walls.

I usually defend quite well and amongst the madness of the main battles, I like to send skirmish parties around the map building smaller bases. Quite a few times I've snuck an army in to his main base and wiped out his villagers Very Happy

Wish they would bring a new one out, never understood why they haven't.

Blimey, there's a blast from the past - I used to play CFS (Combat Flight Sim) and that was the chat-app of choice (IIRC they were dial-up days too)

He might be a D*ck to some people some times, but offers like this he's pretty honourable. He's not going to Doxx you for using his server.

He reminds me of a quote from Guardians of the Galaxy:

"I’m an @sshole, but what I am not is a 100% d*ck"

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Yeah my and my mates used to play Quakeworld on it, it's low net usage is great for not interfering with game latency. Not that AOE players would notice, but yeah it's still going and simple to set up and use. Most people prefer others nowadays, but there's no need for anything more than Roger Wilco for a few players wanting to connect whilst gaming.

I'd say to go for discord, some of the music bots are great, you can request a song with some bots by saying !play songname and even if you spell the name wrong it will usually still find it. The best one is when my friend spelt 'don't let me down' as 'doleme dawn' and it got it.

I've used mumble before but not many others use it.
