I had a quite weird conversation with a friend of a friend who seemed to think it was common knowledge that 9/11 was a complete US government setup ie. they arranged and actioned it themselves to make people hate Muslims even more.

This person was genuinely amazed that I thought he was nuts.

Is this a common belief? I've never heard anyone suggest this.

It's easy to convince yourself that something is "common knowledge" if you surround yourself with like-minded people.

That said, it's a theory I've heard from more than one person in the past.

If the Americans set this up, they wouldn't have crashed a plane into the Pentagon. Plenty more emotive targets without destroying your military infrastructure.

9/11 theories seem to range from the ridiculous

There were no planes! It was all planted soviet mini-nukes and giant holographic projectors making it look like it was planes....

to the more plausible

The bush administration chose not to act on intelligence that suggested an imminent attack was likely and failed to stop the attacks carried out by Al Qaeda

then between those extremes you have various level of tinfoil in pretty much any flavour you could hope to sample.

I worked in the textile trade at the time of 9/11. I was the only white face in the building, all the other guys were of "Pakistani origin".

Once the cheering had died down, they all knew, within hours, (I mean they all knew as an absolute fact), that there were no....repeat no Jews in any of the buildings that day, or on any of the flights.

So it's obvious, it must have been the Jews what done it.

But it wasn't hit by a plane. There was no sign of a plane in the security camera video. They did it because that side needed renovation, so it was an insurance job rather than paying for it out of the maintenance budget.

Not only was there no video footage of a plane,there was no evidence on the ground of one either apparently.....it was supposed to have completely melted in the intense heat.
