Evenin' all.

Basically, rear disc brake on my gpz500 was sticking, pads were also worn. I have removed the rear caliper, brake line and reservoir from the bike intact. I want to strip the whole thing down to clean it all as it's in a sorry state.

I'm stuck though, I can't get the damn thing apart. I know there's a section that holds the brake pads on the caliper that should slide off but I have no idea how to do that. Looking online has yielded no advice. I have included an image from a website. The directions beside the image implied that you could just lift the rubber boots and the plate would slide off nicely, in my case, the thing is solidly stuck on and nothing I do can get it off.

I suspect I am making a silly mistake and would appreciate being corrected so I can get the bike back to being roadworthy.

Thanks all!

Hi

If it isn't moving at all then likely it is seized on the pins it slides on.

Have you got the pads out? If so you might be able to put something between the piston and the carrier, then pump the brakes a touch and have the piston push off the carrier a bit.

All the best

Katy

It should just pull apart by hand.

Sounds fucked.

It'll be stuck in the "open" hole. Theres one pin that slides into a blind casting, the other into an open hol that ends in a bit of rubber. The latter one will be all corroded to hell between the alloy casting the the rubber sleeve.

If you can get this side out, the other should follow it.

Tricky bit is not damaging the calliper itself in doing so so resist the temptation to clamp it in a vice and whale on it with a punch for as long as you can. Try penetratig spray and time.

Then when you do whale on it and break the calliper. Be safe in the knowledge that almost all kawasakis for 10 years had this exact same calliper and that you'll get one on ebay for under £20.

"Not sticking" is something to aim for. "Gripping the disc" is proabably asking a bit much of those callipers. I used to consider "Neither sticking nor spitting out the floating pad" as a win.
