Keeping an old cat warm...

Dylan Supacat is old, 18yrs old, and he is really feeling the cold.

Any recommendations of low voltage heat mats or heated blankets for him to own and 'lord it up' on?

Needs to be something that can be left on all the time, and preferably waterproof because cats are total bastards.

Any of the heated cat beds will work, but you'll have to buy at least one per cat. If you feel kind, put it inside a cardboard box to give him a heated cat lair.

Are you sure those electric pad thingies are safe if a cat were to put its claws into it?

I'd opt for a low tech solution, a lidded cardboard box (with a door cut into one side obviously) lined with foil then with something fleecy or furry over the foil. It'll keep the draughts off him and reflect back the heat he generates.

If the other cats crawl in with him, all the more warmth!

We have a few boxes and places that they hang out, each has a preferred spot, but he really needs a decent heat source.

We've got a small tribe of cats, the oldest is pushing 20 now. My partner is a vet nurse and she swears by the stuff they use in the kennels/hutches, called - originally enough - "vetbed".

The heating here is dire and Pooky is glued to this stuff come winter (unless she's stealing the dogs' bed. Poor little bastard) so I can attest to the fact it works. Easy to clean as well should he get old enough to start having 'accidents'.
