Royal Enfield 500 AVL. I have a small seep from the electric start gear housing around after riding - it's from splash lube coming up from the primary drive case while riding, it doesn't continue to leak after being left standing. It seems to be coming from the inboard face of the housing where it faces the engine: I can just get a finger in and feel that the bottom bolt is loose but I can't quite get at it to nip it up as it's so close to the engine - I've tried a cut down hex key and tapping it round with a punch with no luck.

The right thing to do is remove the whole primary casing to get at the site but a regular 3 arm puller didn't shift the rotor so I will need at least some of the 4 special tools to remove all the drive gear, at a total of £69 dude from India plus delivery delay.

I've tried a dash of Wynns Stop Leak but I'm reluctant to dump a big load in as it's in the primary chain case with the clutch.

Silicone gloop over the apparent leak site might have ameliorated it, but not stopped it. I tried chemical metal (the brand escapes me) over the area, but it wept through (or around) that and it loosened off after riding.

Is there some secret slap / spray / squidge on product that can actually seal an oil leak from the outside? I fear not, but feel that it's worth asking before I switch from carrying a rag to losing it.

I would say that 'Snake Oil' you seek does not exist. Problem is, trying to sort it from the outside you can never get right into the problem area with the normally gloopy sealant. It just tends to sit on the outside and doesn't bond properly to the inner (oily) area where it's needed.

Only thing I can think of there is, or was, a product called an Oyltite Stik that was supposed to work when rubbed into areas like that. I never used one myself and I fear it would be a waste of time anyway. When you add up all the £10 that these wonder products cost that's a wedge out of your specialist tools.

Oil leaks are part of the Enfield charm but wouldn't sorting it would be a nice little winter project?

What Matt says, time to take it apart or weld a pan under the place where it leaks to catch the oil and re-use it. The only positive thing about oil leak is that it preserves the metal bits that would normally rust.

Charming in the dry, bit of a sod in the wet.

If I stopped riding it, I'm sure it would be.

Cheers for the Oyltite heads up. It does run expensive, so I'll put it in the maybe column.

Order a new woodruff key for the rotor before you pull it.

If it's anything like the one on my bullet (on which the rotor has waltzed off the first time of asking each time, 2-leg puller and a tap either side with a nylon mallet) you'll muller it getting it out of the slot.

Mmm, given that it's not for coming off with a puller and some percussive maintenance, I'm wondering if it's been pre-mullered. The primary has already been off once to replace the sprag early on in its life.

Sugru has some good marketing, I might fall for it. Wink

I've tried some Loctite SI 5980 Flange Sealant mmmm flange without any luck. It's entirely possible that I'm spurting on the wrong hole, it's all dark and fiddly down there.
