This question is regarding a VW Polo but I suppose the same applies for all valved engines.

Basically the engine when at idle making a ticking noise (similar to tappets on old Ford engines) and then the engine management light comes on and it goes into limp-home mode.

I've done a number of searches on VW forums but; although the problem seems to be very common (more common that I would have liked to have imagined) nobody seems to have come across with a 100% fix.

The EM light is showing a misfire on cylinder 3. We have replaced the coil and spark plugs (like everyone on the VW forums).

But another thing which keeps being mentioned is sticking valves or a burnt out valve.

Is there any way of un-sticking said valves without having strip the engine down?

If sticky hydro valves id be very tempted to an a decent oil cleaning additive to engine oil and let it get hot.. Drain. Fill and repeat. They are hydraulic and self adjusting.

Worth a shot for about a tenner.

Sure its not a spark issue?
