It seems to me average speed cameras are appearing in more and more places. Eventually all roads will have them. They are an intolerable nuisance and we need a way to go through them without detection. Are there any ways to speed through such systems without coming a cropper? A sludgy number plate is very effective, but leaves you open to be done by live coppers. Long term, is there a solution or is motoring in Britain terminally screwed?

Go to the Isle of Man, buy a Manx registered/plated bike, bring back to the UK, ride as you please. Thumbs Up

From now on, anybody who`s going to crash, MUST crash into a traffic camera Thumbs Up

With the BCF`s ability to crash, we`ll have them gone in no time at all Thumbs Up

Deface them then. If you were so bothered about them you would buy an air rifle or paintball gun and get the job done, rather than complaining on a forum. ! Wink

Hate the things. I had to go Inverness at the weekend, 130 miles up the A9 with average speed cameras the whole way. Then back down again, 260 miles of average speed cameras in 2 days.

I don't have any issue with doing the speed limit in the areas where they currently are.

What I have issue with is having to stare at my speedo constantly because of such fear I might go a smidgen above the limit and get a bloody fine. For this reason, they are completely unsafe. That, and when people are trying to merge lanes and you can't change your speed at all for fear of going over slightly. Pain in the arse!!

Done that myself a few months ago. I did a few miles, got extremely pissed off and though FUCK IT!! Smeared my plate with dirt and carry on. Cleaned plate again once back on motorways due to them being pig farms.

Try live in Belgium where the roads are so awful for bikes, you are forced to ride slower and as such, every cvnt mobile tailgates you at any opportunity they get. It's one country that could really do with a lot more investment in speed cameras.

Agree with the sentiment, if not the bike choice. I've lost interest in road riding this year, 7 or 8 sunny track days is more than enough.

I've scratched the itch to ride on the road twice this year. It was fast, long and fun, well away from PC Plod but I don't miss it.

I'm fairly sure my plate can't be read by cameras. I tripped two speed cameras six weeks ago and haven't had any shitty letters yet, so today I just ignored about 10 speed cameras, half a dozen bus lane cameras and probably a couple of red light cameras. This was just Brixton to the West End and back, about 12 miles. I swear I was a much safer rider today...I could concentrate on the cars and cyclists without worrying about my speedo and the white lines and the bus lane time restrictions and the bike's clock. It was like travelling back a few decades, and I fucking loved it.

Agree.

Have you not pondered the possibility that those two camereas were not working but, those other ten might be? Laughing

I'm sure all of your overtakes were risk free and didn't involve diving madly past right at the end of the dual stretches, or causing oncoming traffic to brake sharply to avoid a head on.

Until those cameras went in, every time I went up the A9 there was a crash or the aftermath of one visible thanks to rageface road warriors who just had to shave that critical 5 minutes off of their hundred mile journey. Every time.

I railed against them when they were planned, but in practice and in conjunction with the 50 limit for HGVs (which means they do an indicated 60) they've actually transformed the road for the better.

True. I remember the days.

Although these days, even tractors have cameras: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11898960/Police-hide-speed-cameras-in-tractors.html

What do you have on your plate?

This whole "staring at my speedo" excuse is just bollocks.

I don't stare at my speedo, and have been driving/riding for 11 years. Yet to get done for speeding.

Depends if it's a reasonable limit, like the NSL on the A9.

If it's an 30mph wide open urban dual carriageway infested by Kojak with a Kodak, or a 40mph average speed motorway restriction to "protect" a non-existent workforce[*] then it's probably harming safety more than it's helping.

[*] Aggravates me because it breeds contempt for the situation when there's actually a workforce there to be protected.

Nail on head. The law is meant to be enforced with discretion. If discretion is never exercised, respect for the law diminishes.
