PostPosted: 13:15 - 04 Nov 2015    Post subject: Fun car for £2k Reply with quote

At the end of the month I'll be in the market for a reasonably fun car and I'll have around £2k to play with, though I could stretch that slightly more. Ideally I'd like something fun and involving to drive, but not necessarily quick. It should be fairly reliable, non ugly and not cost a fortune to insure. Occasional rear seats are a must so unfortunately an MX5 is out.

So far I've got my eye on E46 coupes and Celica T Sports have caught my eye and I'll try a few test drives of both this weekend. I don't fancy a Clio 172, despite being a lot of fun they also feel very French and I think I might want something a bit more grown up.

Any other suggestions?

2 grand will get you a bug-eye Impreza WRX with under 80/90,000 miles. Get one with cambelt history and as much service history as possible and it'll run for that much again.

Interesting. I'm in a similar boat, I kind of want something for pure fun rather than the barge I'm racking the miles up in. I may go for an older MX5.

Wild card for you: Saxo VTS Razz With a small amount of money spent they make great track cars!

Unless you want RWD of course.

EDIT: Just seen you want grown up. Laughing

330ci's can be had for cheep. Not sure if they are fun to drive though, pretty heavy - make a nice noise though. Thumbs Up

Not excruciatingly bad but heavier than the coupe with a flexier chassis and the same understeery handling with numb steering feel.

Would not recommend.

I've had both a Saxo VTS and a Clio 172. If he's ruled out the Renault, you may as well forget the Citroen. Both fun to drive, IMO, but the Saxo was even less robust than the Clio.

Even a DC2 ITR appears to be well out of my price range, CTR may well be a good option though.

Apart from single figure mpg what's an RX8 like to live with?

Engines last 70-90K and you need to factor the cost of oil into your mpg figures Laughing . Other than that they are nice cars.

I had one for 3 years when they were first launched.

Yes they are thirsty - I got around 18-25 mpg depending on the balance of urban to highway miles. Oil: not as bad as people make out - 1 litre every 3-4000 miles which is as good/bad as many high output recip engines. You can feed them cheapish oil too (in fact they prefer it, some say).

Practicality-wise, I thought it was fantastic. Four full-size adults can use it comfortably. I once drove my wife and my parents to and around northern France for a long weekend in it, including all our luggage. My dad is 6' and went in the back with no issues. The boot is quite large (for the type) but does have a small opening.

Driving it was fun - revvy-tits-offy when you wanted to but perfectly happy to pull from lower revs if you didn't - I would happily accelerate out of a 30 mph limit in 4th gear with no bogging or lugging. Handling was good and the standard equipment list was high (for the time); I had the 231PS model with sat nav, which came with heated leather, xenons and a 6CD 250W BOSE stereo. The 231 gets a 6-speed gearbox too (the 190PS has a 5er and halogens).

In three years and around 38,000 miles nothing went wrong...

...BUT...

...I wouldn't have one now. I know I put it out there, but I was just saying what there is. Despite Mazda's efforts to make the engine as reliable as a recip, it isn't. There's no way I would take a second-hand one with unknown history (ie history that I personally couldn't verify). If you don't mind approaching them the same way you might approach an old 2-stroke (ie they are fickle and fragile but easy to rebuild) then it might be worth a punt.

£2K would get a very tidy Mk5 Golf 2.8 V6 4-Motion. Pretty much a softer version of the R32.

Aren't Mk5 Golfs quite soggy and heavy? Not driven one of those but I did have a go in a GTI and thought it was underwhelming, can't see that being improved with a big V6 and 4wd.

Edit: that was a Mk4. I can't find a Mk5 2.8?

Weasley: thanks, that's really helpful.

Hellkat: blue is the fastest colour as any fule kno.

Enjoying my Pug 206cc 1600 (2000 can be had)
Roof down = fun in my book. Not a bad drive. Ok mpg 35ish but this is commuting that is killing it. Long run can be 40+
2+ 2 in the back (so long as they are not too tall)
Could also look @ 207cc.

Mum's got a 206 Gti 140 which I've probably borrowed more than she's ever driven it in total. They desperately need a 6th gear and there are few cars that use so much fuel to go so slowly. Handle ok though.

FTOs will go on the shortlist, as will the Alfas. I have to admit GTVs, 147s and Coupes all give me the horn; there's a tidy, cheap 147 GTA with only 55k in my budget on eBay. The only problem: it's in Edinburgh!

Edit: it's not a real GTA. I probably can't afford them.

Thanks folks, I've got some test drives to arrange.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Remapped Fabia VRS can be found for that sort of dough.
300lb/ft torque at around 2500rpm approx 170bhp at Stage 1.
Mind the clutch though, I mullered my dmf quite early on and the replacement clutch/dmf kit plus fitting set me back about 600 quid.

A diesel polo by another name doesn't appeal. In fact a diesel anything doesn't really. I think if I was having a VAG I'd be stretching my budget for a Leon Cupra R, which I've had a go in before and is much more inspiring than a Golf.

Thanks ladies and gents, I think I've got enough to go on, I'll do some test driving and report back.

Cracking little cars. Mate of mine has one having had lots of fun cars previously (type R and mx5 included) and seems to enjoy this even more.

I've driven it a good bit and given it a beating and it's a plucky little fella

It's a good car. He's had it 2-3 years now and nothing at all has gone wrong with it - it's near 110K miles now so it's proven reliable.

I'd have one for a cheap hack
