So faced with the tedious task of applying an oil-based top-coat to skirtings, picture rails and twiddly bannister spindles, I'm considering using a gloss roller for the first time ever. Anyone got experience with these? Do they do a better or quicker job?

I like them, especially for doors.

Unless the carpet/flooring is up, or really well protected, I don't think I'd be brave enought to use one on a skirting board. One quick deviation and you're ploughing lovely white paint into your Axminster/oak grain.

I found that it got the paint on more quickly but the finish isn't a smooth because you end up with a slitly stippled finish.

My solution was to apply the paint with a small roller, then smooth with a soft brush.

Upside, nice finish.

Downside, brush AND roller to clean/bin.

ATM we're a carpet free house, so overrun isn't a problem and we're using an eggshell paint rather than a high gloss finish, so I suppose I'll give it bash.
(I'll bin the rollers since hey cost bugger-all).

Mask off well, use the green frog tape b and q sell and just go to town, those gloss rollers are a doddle.
Line your trays with decent quality foil and at the end just throw the foil away leaving a clean tray.
And between shifts just wrap your roller heads with foil or cling film to stop them drying out and then
just lob them at the end too. Sod cleaning them for ages, they're 99p each.
Is your eggshell full oil based eggshell or water based? If it's full eggshell then make sure you have good
ventilation, I tend to do bathroom and kitchen ceilings with full eggshell as once cured it's very cleanable
and water resistant. But it can get a bit much in a closed room. I've been halfway up a ladder and suddenly
feeling a bit drunk on the fumes. I only brush paint if there's no other choice otherwise I roller more or
less everything. Rolling leaves thinner, more even coats so tend to dry quicker too. At least if you can do
two coats in one session. it doesn't seem quite so much of a death sentence.

A roller leaves it like eggshell, not a bad thing but not as smooth as a good brush.

Also - modern oil based glosses are now complete shite. The EU banned one of the important volatiles so gloss whites now go yellow within a few months. I bought some expensive dulux gloss in April and now it is yellow in all areas that aren't exposed to direct sunlight.

Water based glosses are the new thing, although I haven't tried any to review, the consensus is they stay white, make brush cleaning easy but are harder to get the smooth, wrapped in plastic look a proper gloss will get you.

Top tip. Nobody looks at skirting boards. Don't worry about how good the finish is, just get the pain on.

What I do is take the skirting boards off. Number them on the back. Paint them on a bench in the shed. Stick them back on with a bead of cheap frame sealant along the top edge. Next time I need to do them, I just cut the sealant with a stanley knife.

This also lets you paint/wallpaper to below the level of the skirting.

I use gloss rollers for doors and get a good enough finish, just remember not to go to fast as you can get bubbles forming (plus a bit of fling).

Also they're no good for any significantly profiled wood.

I use paint pads.

No brush strokes, no stippling, no spatters and they make the paint go a bit further.

If you are doing doors with a roller take them off their hinges first and do it flat, gravity is your friend.

They were supposed to have sorted this last year (at least the trade side did)...give their helpline a ring (0333 22 7070) and they usually send vouchers etc for replacement paint.

Slightly lower sheen level but still pretty good. A decent synthetic brush is the way to go though...dampened slightly before using it.
If you're going over previous oil based paint though, you'll need to sand it back as much as possible and use a water based undercoat or primer/undercoat first.
