Help with installing graphics card....

Hi all.

I got a new graphic card, a gtx980ti.

I took out my old card, a gtx770 and put in the 980.

On turning on the computer, the 980 fans did not spin up, the little logo on the side which i presume lights up, did not light up, and there was no display output from either the graphics card hdmi port, or the motherboards vga port.

I then put the 770 back in, booted up and all worked fine.

I tried to update my graphics drivers in case that was the issue, and during the update, my hdd ran out of space. this left the update in limbo, unable to complete.

I turned the system off.

Now with the 770 installed, the fans spin but there is no display output from the 770 hdmi port, or the motherboard vga port.
With the 980 installed, the fans do not spin, the logo does not light up, and there is no display output from the 770 hdmi port, or the motherboard vga port.
With no graphics card installed there is display output from the motherboard vga port.

I tried deleting all the graphics card drivers, and when that didn't work, I even did a full re-installation of windows.

Please if anyone has any ideas on how to help, I really am stumped.


Running Windows 7,
corsair ax850 psu,
16gb RAM,
intel 3570k i5,
asus p8z77-v pro.

Plugging the power connectors into the card?

Yea. The 770 needed two 8 pins, the 980 needs one 8 pin and one 6 pin.

I have 2x 6 pin plugs, which have little 2 pin add ons to make them up to 8 pin plugs.

All properly pushed in and wiggled about to make sure.

Got another pc there to test it in?

unfortunately no other PC to test on.

Also the original card isnt working properly as well. with either card in the pci slot there is no display output at all.

Could be but that doesn't explain why his old 770 is doing the same thing now?

You been messing about in the BIOS?

My SLi setup stopped working a good while ago (think I made a thread on here) and in the end, turned out the PCI lane on the mobo had deaded.

Never had a PCI lane go on me before in all the years of running higher end rigs with SLi / Crossfire configs. Was the last thing I expected to happen.

Have you tried in different PCI lanes?

With the fact the old card is doing similar as well now, it's possible the PCI lane has gone funny like I said but I'd also be wondering if hooking up the new card may have done something to the PSU.

What PSU are you running?

Pull any drives, try 1 card, see if it gets to the bios.

Checking on the Nvidia site, it says the 770 is 220w and the 980ti is 250w

Not a huuuuge difference but it depends if you were already pushing the PSU near its limits on the 770.

psu is a corsair ax850

770 in situ, no hdd connected, i get post beep but no display.

will try other pci slot now

Ok,

On-board still works yeah?
Check for a bios update.
Reset the bios to defaults.

See what happens.

just reset bios/cmos and the 770 is working again. installed the drivers and its back to 100%.



which then brings me back to where i was yesterday afternoon, about to swap the 770 for a 980.

do i need to delete the drivers for the 770 first, or can i just take out the 770 and put in the 980?

Check for bios update.
If there isnt one then:-

uninstall all nvidia drivers.
power down
remove 770
boot using onboard
power down
fit new gfx
power up

all is good. clearing the bios/cmos seems to have donethe trick. 980 is all up and running thanks guys

6GB of VRAM on them 980 Ti cards, should destroy pretty much anything.
