Laptop recommendation

I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to laptops, always had desktop PCs. However, I need to ditch the PC and get a laptop to take abroad with me as my only computer.

This is an interim choice for maybe 4 or 5 months at which point i'll buy something like an Asus GL552VW from the USA where they are much cheaper than here.

The requirements are that it's not too expensive, so i'm thinking around £350 max but hopefully cheaper, i'm not planning to play games on it but it'd be nice if it has the power to play some older stuff if necessary. It's mostly going to be for the usual stuff. Ideally i'd like a 1080p screen too. The thing i'm a bit clueless on is the processors, I just don't want one that's a bit crap, for the price range i'm looking at i'm expecting integrated graphics.

Suggestions welcome.

Ok so usual stuff means internet browsing, streaming HD films online via Flash, fairly simple video editing and encoding, things that i'd expect most entry level laptops to cope OK with now, I just want one with enough extra poke to play a game or two if I want and not complain when i've got a whole bunch of internet tabs open.

It will need to be able to play 1080p video files, MP4/MKV without issues, again i'd be amazed if any laptops struggle with this, given most phones can do it since the Galaxy S3. Battery life isn't a huge issue as i'll usually have power via an inverter, about 5hours would be nice. Also looking for 15.6" screen, 17" is too big really.

I'll look at those two links provided, thanks. My biggest issue is just that I haven't a clue about which processors are worth avoiding or what to pay a few extra quid for to get something that is a lot better etc.

Yes, thanks, I plan to stick to my budget but the extra few quid refers to a laptop that is £300 vs one that is £350 for example....ie within my budget.

The laptop linked is 17" screen which is too big and even then not 1080p so it's not a contender, the website does have some other 15" laptops though for a better price with similar specs that don't look bad, seems 1080 is hard to find though without going to top spec laptops, strange given how most phones are that resolution.

When I had a similar budget I spent £250 on a laptop with a decent processor then the rest on an SSD, more RAM and a better wireless card.

I wouldn't dismiss CaNsA idea of a tablet btw as it will do everything you need it to do and have a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and you could get a USB hub to have everything you want also.
100% dismissing a windows/android tablet then doesn't leave you much options for your price range unless you are willing to go refurb or hunt gumtree for something thats going to suit all your needs.
Editing on a laptop I would personally look for something that has a 4core i5 or go 4 core i7 but getting a 4core i5 on a budget is like hens teeth, your going to need a decent amount of ram also and a dedicated GPU always helps but again depends on your editing really.

*edit* I personally don't like AMD mobile chips very much but you could always go down that route as they are cheaper than intel ones at every reach.

I go into a lot of meetings not with my laptop but with an Android tablet preloaded with all the documents I need. I wrote an article for a book on a tablet whilst on a train last month. Problem with two of you in this thread is that you don't seem to be able to interpret the purpose of the question originally proposed.

"this is what I want, now suggest laptops that fit those criteria". Instead we have badger man telling me I actually don't want a windows PC but an android system and that I don't even want a laptop but a tablet. Well no, those two things i'd already decided for myself.

Point is the laptop is going to be just that, a laptop, i'll be on the road a lot in America and do not want to have a system that is a tablet which I have to hook up a separate keyboard to and a USB hub to plug things in, it's just not what I want at all when a laptop is exactly what I want.

Some of the first two suggestions were suitable, until badger man starts twisting things out of shape.

So I won't "wind my neck in" as you two like to put, I suggest you both go wind yours in.

You two really struggle don't you, I guess that's why you have spent your life on the forums since I stopped visiting 5 or 6 years ago.

I didn't make any laptop suggestions so there was nothing for you to agree with, all I wanted was some suggestions on models and websites/links out there with decent deals on for laptops providing specs that matched what I was looking for.

Your two quotes make no sense Cancer, they just say exactly the same thing, "i told you what I want (laptop, HD, 15")", and someone starts telling me I don't want those things I want an android tablet. That, my little munchkin is where you two seem to struggle.

Maybe if I put it into bike terms you'll understand more. If I create a thread saying I want a 600cc sportsbike to commute, go to the shops and look at and badger man responds telling me that he's a racer and rides an R1 so what I actually want is a 50cc moped, someone isn't quite following the plot are they.

I have found something now anyway, all I needed was a typewriter and some crayons, was silly of me to think I needed a laptop for such trivial tasks.
