Well I jumped on the DK2 soon after it came out, and when I got it I was blown away. I've used it for a few things; mostly a couple of games, not really watching video. The first thing I usually say about the Rift (DK2);

There are no words, no videos, no descriptions or articles, no comments or previews... absolutely nothing can convey what it's like to experience Oculus' VR implementation except putting on an Oculus Rift and trying it out.

My first impressions after trying out just 2-3 titles were I was completely amazed. I've tried minecrift with it (mod for minecraft, pretty good) and that was impressive. There are a few technical aspects which they worked out in order to make it comfortable which I could go into more detail about but suffice to say the guys who did minecrift have done a great job.

Far and away the most amazing experience (and the game I've used the Rift for most) has to be Elite Dangerous. I got into the beta just to try it out and I was not dissapointed. Despite initially not having a lot to do in game, I spent the first few hours of 'play' just sitting there in my chair, gormless expression on my face and just staring around at the graphics in front of me. The sense of 'presence' that was achieved with that game was staggering. I now can't play Elite without the rift; it's too debilitating not being able to look around.

That being said the DK2 while amazing does have some caveats. As mentioned there is a distinct "screen door effect" evident which is not too distracting but always there. Basically you see the lines between the pixels. The other drawback is that the resolution is too low to present detailed graphics, especially text. Further away (or smaller) text is a bit hard to read in Elite. How do I cope with this? This is one of the best things about the Rift; I just leaned in towards the text! Without thinking, I was using features of the rift as I would do something in 'the real'.

I got the email the other day about pre orders for the consumer version. It's going to have higher than 1080p resolution which is good, but it will mean that I'd need a better graphics card than I currently have. I was half expecting that.

While I wouldn't suggest getting a DK2 unless they've come down in price a lot (maybe not even then; they may not be very well supported moving forward) I would say that if given the opportunity to try one out, or even better the crescent bay that's been shown at demos, you should. The people I've shown the DK2 to (family and friends) had a similar reaction to me of amazed wonder. Often trying to grab or poke things in the rift that weren't there in real life, or reeling back from scary things.

I'll be saving up to get the consumer version and a new GFX card as soon as I can afford it.

Ps4 gamer myself,
My thoughts are if the oculus rift cost the price it does and has such a high price plus needing a good pc to run what is the new ps vr going to be like?
Interested in trying one in store myself, but will it be a poor man's oculus?

Word on teh street is you console peasants will need to buy another bit of hardware if you want to use the OR.

Not sure about the PSVR though, but we all know the "next-gen" consoles are equal to 3y/o entry level machines.

Got to agree there isn't much next gen about the new consoles, well they aren't that new anymore, but I'm not impressed at all with them really,
Don't get the time to game these days but will give uncharted 4 ago

Why are people still calling the current consoles 'next gen' ?

they've been out quite a while now, shouldn't it be 'current gen' or 'new gen'

Elite Dangerous is the only game I could use it with... not enough reason to spend so much money on VR headset I think.

Ps vr has now been priced and release date announced,

Anyone interested?

I do want to go and try one myself, I probably wouldn't use it enough to justify the price though,

But I am tempted with it, need to find somewhere to try it out

I'm more tempted by the Vive now with the cameras and controllers to map the space you're in.

Still keeping a keen eye on it.

I've been using Virtual Desktop for a while and it's really nifty. That being said, it can be very hard to read a page as it can feel out of focus and you have to re-adjust your headset position to make everything clear again. This could be because of the resolution on the DK2 to be fair, but I find my self constantly having to strain to get some text into focus (I don't wear glasses or anything, eyes are good).

I've found the youtube video player doesn't work every time I try to watch a 360 video, nor does it play .mkv files, which is a real pain. There are ways to add multiple screens apparently by tricking the computer into thinking there's more, I haven't done that yet, but I think that would be really cool to have a couple of monitor spaces available.

I recently discovered Vorpx - which turns games like GTA5, Arma3 and Alien Isolation into 3D immersive games. The software is like £40 and I can't justify it development seems to be slow, with mixed reviews, but it looks really cool and the videos on youtube make it look awesome.

I came up with this idea about 2 years ago, told my bro I should build it but don't have experience in that type of tech, good to see someone has done it, I do think this will replace the need for monitors at all when the VR has evolved a bit.

I was thinking more of an AR and VR setup, either place any monitor config on an empty desk so it feels more natural or a full VR experience.

Porn Hubs VR mode is great with a cardboard or similar device Very Happy

Anyway, who's actually jumping on the VR bandwagon quite soon with a commercial released headset?

I stopped myself from buying a dev kit as I didn't even want to see it until it was polished.

Now I'm in heavy research mode as to whether I get an Oculus or Vive.

Leaning heavily towards the Vive at the moment for obvious reasons... the controllers.

I do want to see some hands on videos from normal people, not professional reviewers or big brands (heavily biased from sponors, etc).

REALLY want to try that Virtual Desktop, looks incredible.

There's a good view games shipping with Vive and although I'm sure they're fun, I'm looking more for simulation. I want to watch movies in a VR cinema and it feel like you're actually there, I want to see what a POV wingsuit flight is like in 360 degree video, etc.

I'd love to play something like GTA V in 1st person mode VR, that type of thing.

Still got that screen door effect, but it's not as bad as it was.
Still feel all huey if things move while you aren't controlling them.
Still get a hot face wearing the headset, but haven't noticed any steaming up.
But I've only used it for about 10 mins Smile

We are having a problem possibly with the supplied xbox controller, may be microsoft driver issues.

Still fun though Smile

Eh?

They are saying IF you must spend £600 on something, spend it on upgrading your pc with the v2 in mind.

Debating whether to buy a Vive now, or hang on for a couple of months and see how things pan out as it's still early days. I'd quite like to get the new Nvidia 1070 / 1080 Pascal GPU as well.

I have a Gtx 980 Ti at the moment, which is more than capable but I'm liking everything I read about the new GPU's.

I do think VR is going to be absolutely huge, a game changer and so I already have started learning 3D rendering applications, making objects, buildings, rooms, etc.

I think in the next 5 years, entire new industries will have emerged where VR experience designers are hot in demand in all kinds of different scenarios.

For example, interior design of a project and creating environments for the developers/clients to walk around in their new place and visualise where things go, etc. That alone would be big bucks. I know this already exists now but when the VR tech is common place, it will be a pretty common thing to have done.

When v2 comes out, except maybe the top stuff, the parts probably won't be good enough. If I must spend only £600, then Geforce 980Ti will be it Smile

Rift?

Would you say comfortable to wear for 2 hrs watching a film? Have you tried watching movies with it? Does it strain your eyes or make you feel sick?

Get the Asus 980ti OC Strix version, it's probably the second best of the bunch, with the Zotac Amp being the beefiest but you're up near £700 with that

I'd have to know the warranty was there, I don't like buying second hand things if it's not covered by warranty, rather just get it new then you know what the deal is with it.

I will wait at least a month from now, look at them again in May and hopefully have some good reviews out.
