Anyone actually tried a high end VR headset out?

Been watching Oculus Rift DK2 headsets on eBay and really tempted to get one. They're scheduled for commercial release anyway some time in the first half of 2016 but the more I watch videos on YouTube and with the introduction of those 360 degree videos, it seems like a good time to get involved.

I've had a go with the Oculus DK1 and DK2. They're fun but I'll be waiting for the consumer version. After the initial "wow I'm doing VR" has worn off I couldn't see it getting much use until some real games are available.

I wonder if 360 degree 3D videos are a thing yet.

How much did you pay for yours?

I thought they had that shit locked down! Is not truly immersive?

From what I've seen, you can get it to work with games like GTA V, etc but I assume through some kind of 3rd party mod/app?

Have you tried watching any movies on it? ( in the cinema app thing )

It was brand new so whatever the RRP on the Oculus site is what i paid for it.
Yes it's immersive, very much so and playing games like Assetto Corsa which has support for the Oculus is fantastic, it take a good bit of time for your eyes to adjust and to try and see past the SDE.
Support for GTA will be 3rd Party, I tried playing War Thunder with it but it fucked with me too much and i got too disorientated.

POV porn is awesome, that's all I'll say about movie viewing with it Laughing

Why did you buy yours?

With it being a dev kit, is everything fiddly as fuck to get working?

All the dev kits are sold out.
We just sold our Oculus. It's on it's way to Sweden to be part of an exhibition in the Spring. Think the artist uses software and they need the Oculus to view it. We got a fair bit more than we paid for it.

Waiting for retail versions to appear, then we'll buy another.

I've heard good things about the Vive, apart from the price Shocked

I've got DK2 - Bought it about a month and a bit ago from Ebay for £310. I tried one at a local Arcade and had to get one. That being said, I barely use it now, and have instead started using Unreal to work on my own game for it.

The tech is amazing, and everyone I've let try it have been absolutely blown away by it. There is a rollercoaster simulator that friends and family love.

I have played a few things and not really suffered much in the way of motion sickness. A flying game made me feel a little sick when turning and looking down, and when I tried Quake VR - which moved too fast, I had to stop playing after 15minutes (Really tried to endure).

It's one of the few things I've bought on a whim that I've not regretted immediately. I do love it.

It ended up being about £529 for us in the UK.
Tax, import, etc is included. Not sure about exchange rates, closer to shipping date, but don't think the price will change.

I think i'll wait for Sony's version which should be released this year.

As a console user it's the best way to go for me and Sony will have put a lot of R&D into it so i can't see it being crap.

I only want it for project cars / the new GT game anyway Laughing

Well that was expected. I knew that shit wasn't going to be £200 - £250, coupled with the fact you need a fairly high end PC and GPU to run it properly, it's going to end up a gamers product to start.

I'm not really arsed about the price, £500 odd for a good VR experience is fine with me if that's what they all end up costing.

I toyed with the idea of buying the dev kit but I'll just hang on until summer, see what all the other offerings have got.

Are you sure, as when pre ordering, it says tax and import duty will be calculate and charged when payment is collected.

Consumer:- "£529? Naa, I'll wait and see how things go first and see what games are available."

Developer:- "£529? Naa, think we best wait and see if there is a market before spending too much time and money making games for it."

That vicious cycle was supposed to have been broken by the Rift being cheap. That was the whole point of it as far as I was concerned.

I have had a great idea for a VR application, toying with the idea of actually developing it but I know it won't be cheap.

I really want to launch a product/service/app this year, something I put my expertise in to and draft others in, front a bit of cash myself as well.

This is the thing though, they reckon just 1% of people are "VR Ready" to run a high end kit like the OR.

I do think it's a tech that will stay around, it will be adopted by all kinds of industries for all kinds of applications but with the price point being quite steep, it's going to scare off a lot of people getting it from the get go.

All that's done is stifle interest in the OR and hold it back, nothing they can do though as the dev kits where built with existing off the shelf components and the retail version has high end tech that they had to develop themselves.

Look at 4k, 3-4 years ago, it was a dream to most people unless you had £15,000 for a 4k screen when they came out. Now they are peanuts but that's another example of the tech being too pricey to start off with and it stifling progress until it became affordable.

Even now 4K screens are affordable, where's all the content? People where betting on it being a fad, didn't start gearing up the 4K content and now we're gagging for more to consume.

I do like the idea of the Vive and the sensors for the room, etc. From the very cheap £30 headset I bought to put my phone in and check it out at the very bottom end, I was quite impressed by it. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these retail VR products.
