Got an Oculus rift when the DK1 kit was just released, was a nice idea but not really usable. Never got round to developing anything for it. Mainly I was annoyed that it wasn't upgradable at all. Have since bought an OSVR - once I get SteamVR to talk to it nicely, I'll be pretty much set for gaming.
Cost buggerall compared to the Rift, too.

Tested have just done a general comparison on the rift and vibe.

MEGA waffle (but some nice person has summed it up in the comments.

Interesting listen if you're into it (I managed 10mins then just read the summary)

I hadn't heard of that one! Looks promising. Kinda like what I was expecting from the Rift.

Did you use the Rift DK2 kit at all? Would be interested to hear how the OSVR compares.

The DK1 and 2 were supposedly leagues apart?

From the limited go I got on both of them I'd say yes. The DK1 was clearly a developers kit and I couldn't imagine using it to actually play on regularly. The DK2 seemed good enough for someone that isn't too bothered about getting the perfect VR experience.

If the OSVR is DK2 standard then I'll get one ordered for that price!

I'm after using one as a big screen more than using it for full on virtual reality.

I'm also interested in using it as a cinema / virtual desktop. Definitely see that as where we're going in the next 5 years.

From what I read, text is meant to be quite poor on them

We are now Vive owners too.
OMG! hand controllers!!
I was like a little kid, lighting torches, Vanishing realms was the game, only played for a little while but ooo magic!

PLayed the portal based game. I had 2 gun things in my hand. The controllers give you that bit of extra illusion. Short but cool.

Also tried a game that I have no idea what it's called Razz
blue and orange ball things fly at you to a star wars remixed funky music style and you have to touch either blue or orange (or both as purple). The controllers give some feedback, feel like you are actually touching the balls. Excellent stuff!

Oculus are really missing out not having their controllers already.

Room scale is also the thing. Sitting down with a joypad is nothing compared to the ability to move around and actually touch stuff.

I've been putting off selling my DK2, cause I really cannot be bothered with the hassle of eBay. But I am after a Vive. Being able to play Rift games on the Vive just eliminates the need for the Rift at all.

Is it not limiting when you want the VR element but you need to move about in a game quickly?

i.e. With a 360 controller playing GTA, you need to move from A to B quick on foot. I saw a mod where you teleport to where you want to go but that's shit.

Still not got my Vive yet, been super busy with work and would be a huge distraction right now.

"How's the build coming along?" - *me having a wank in space* "Great, really coming together now!".

Probably cop for one in September.

Not sure it would work with games not optimised for vr but the games I played were made with vr as the focus.
The teleport thing works well. More like a point and click effect.
There is practically no sensation of nausea for me when using the vive. Because I'm in control of all my movement I guess.
Teleporting to the edge of something is weird though. The drop! Makes me move away from the edge!
Funny how the brain can be fooled Smile

https://www.vorpx.com/

That's what I'm talking about, there's a lot of games that have been made to work with VR.

It's still possible to use a 360 controller with the Vive though?

Didn't know about vorpx, looks interesting Smile
Have only used the controllers so far with the vive, but it is xbox controller compatible, among others I believe.

Will have to dig out Inquisition and see if I can play amongst dragons Smile

Has anyone gone for the Playstation VR?

I know that the specs appear lower than the Rift and the Vive but early reports seem very good with little SDE although the lack of processing power of the PS4 looks like it might be limiting the graphics.

I've got one on preorder, it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

From what I hear, the PS VR is one of the worst options for VR that will be on the market.

Speaking of other VR systems, anyone had experience with the Samsung Gear VR?

I know they were giving them away with some S7 phones and a few others, wonder how good they are or is it just a gimmick?

I picked one up a week or so ago for £60. Wasn't expecting much, but wanted to see what was what.

In all honesty, I've been totally blown away by it. Playing Dreadhalls is the most genuinely immersive and creepy gaming experience I've had. Watching your 3d movie collection whilst sat on the moon doesn't seem to get boring either!

As a little taster of VR, it's well worth the money IMO and has totally convinced me to let Sony take my money as soon as PSVR is released. It's also a lot nicer to use than a cardboard as you get the Oculus hub to launch from, and a full set of controls on the headset.

Give it a go Thumbs Up

Tried it round a friends. I was underwhelmed TBH, low-res, and it actually made me feel sick.

Not sold on it for gaming, I was initially impressed by the Google spotlight stories but I think I'm over it now.

It aint no Vive / Oculus but when it's a freeby with a flag ship phone or 60 bucks, can't hurt and it's un-tethered.

As much as playing VR games is probably endless fun, what's the best thing so far in VR that's not a game?

Is there any photorealistic stuff that's good?

Anyone doing any 360 VR roller coaster stuff? (Not a game)

I remember them domes as a kid which played real roller coaster footage on a giant curved screen which made you feel like you were on it. You'd sway back and forth stood up right, usually found in fair grounds / theme parks.

Also remember going in a fighter pilot simulation machine totally off my nut on a cocktail of uppers, it was fucking terrifying and the fact it was inside a large hydraulic machine that was like a 12 seater plane, made it even more terrifying when it was banking left and right and doing steep climbs and dives.

That's the kind of stuff which would lend well to VR I think.

Oh and pr0n Very Happy

We have sit-down simulator, my OH uses it for driving 'games'.
He used to use the DK2 a lot on it, very immersive.

I've given it a go in a roller coaster sim. It helps when the seat jiggles around, gives you that sense of being there, but....

Using a roller coaster sim without the simulator, just turns it into a nauseating experience. The impression that you are moving when your body knows you are not is a head-fuck for the brain.

Haven't tried any experiences recently when you are not the one controlling your movement.

I would love a 3d bike simulator. I have seen one online but it was a uni project type thing, nothing commercial.

Jesus, just checked the price of Vive and it's now £770 + P&P because of, wait for it... "Brexit".

We haven't even fucking left and they've put a 10% price increase on it. Not that it would put me off because I want one anyway and fuck it but still, cheeky little cunts.

You are aware of how weak the £ has become compared to the $?
