I want to get my A2 license, don't know the best way to go about it. I've got my theory test out the way now I need the practical. I don't know if I should book one of these courses for 300 odd pound or get lessons by the hour. I don't want to spend more than I need to. The bloke who does lessons by the hour said they can provide a bike for the test but only when he feels I'm ready, so this could turn out costing more than the course... or a lot less. I've been driving for a year on my L plates so I have decent riding skills, road knowledge isn't great though.

What you reckon?

Read the Highway Code.
Watch the DVSA (and DSA as-was) test videos on YouTube.
Analyse your riding.
Book A1 module 1 for £15.50
Smash it in.
Book A2 module 2 for £75
Epic victory.

Then either buy yourself an A2 bike and find a way to insure and get it to the test centre, or go back to your by-the-hour chap and say "I can pass the tests, I've proved I can pass them, and I did it the hard way on a 125. So I don't need shit from you except the use of your A2 bike and an escort ride to the test centre, which I'm prepared to pay for. Do you like getting money for nothing, or should I bypass you and recommend that everyone else does the same?"

Maybe not use quite those terms, but I hope you get the point. The tests are exactly the same regardless of the bike, and you're already in possession of a way of doing them. They're not hard - have a go.

It's a dilemma a lot of people find themselves in when they have ridden a 125 for a while and know they don't need a package deal from a training company.

The problem is, the training companies are in no short supply of trainees that want the full package, so you are well down on their list of people to please, especially this time of year.

My advice is to bite the bullet and go for a company that does an A2 package for around £500. Expensive I know, but I tried and failed for a good while to find a company that would give me the little I needed.
I passed mod 1 with 2 minors (1kph too slow on both the timed) and I passed mod 2 with no minors. I learned absolutely nothing from the training but know why they do what they do.

Best of luck.

hmm, I hate dilemmas like this. easy to over think.

It's tempting to just go for the package, a lot less hassle and that, but also tempting to go by the hour... depends how long he will string it out for Rolling Eyes

After a 125 for over a year, I wanted a days training then mod 1, then another days training and mod 2.

Found a school that could fit me in, did a Monday and Thursday IIRC think I paid £200 for each day, including instructor, bike hire, test fees and everything.

Luckily, passed first time, so turned out excellent value in my book. £400 and no licence would've got expensive, quickly

£300 is a bargain if you get lessons and tests included, I'd snap their arm off for that.

I paid about £850 all in for mine, with one MOD 1 fail.
