Just bought a fibre optic kit to make a "twinkling ceiling star thingy" for the nipper

Kit looks cool, but cant decide how best to mount it to the ceiling?

Was thinking of using that Jablite insulation board stuff covered in black fabric, screwed in the joists (with a gap for the controller)

But bit worried about fire risk etc?

basically, i need a board mounting to the ceiling to hold all the fibres & controller. The board doesn't need to be the toughest thing as the whole kit doesn't weigh much.

Thought of using MDF but it would sag - unless i battened it out?

any ideas?

im gonna go with 6mm MDF its light enough to work by my self, i will need the board in two halves as it wont all fit in our work van Sad

So i will have to run timber down the long lengths with the mdf pinned to this - this will also give me an air gap for the fibre optic driver thingy

then its just a case of drilling some holes painting it all black an fitting the optics

busy this weekend i reckon

I'd be thinking ultra light weight. 1" timber into a frame, then use speaker cloth fabric or similar to cover it. LEDS on the inside, naturally.

I was going to use that polystyrene stuff, but then it generally comes in white or black with white bits, so would need painting - Ive had issues with painting foam in the past where its melted Shocked

At least with the mdf it shoudl be pretty easy/ nice to paint an flat

I will need to stuff the driver (electronics for the lights) on top of the board aswell, that weighs 500+ grams

I'm gonna run some led's (3528 - i think) around the end of the board pointing upwards towards the ceiling

still need to track down the joists yet aswell.....

I did this for my newborn's room a few months ago.

I didnt bother with a false ceiling, as the loft space was abover her room, so I drilled around 200x 0.75mm and 1mm holes straight through the plasterboard.
This is not fun in the summer, with loose fiberglass insulation!

The light box lives above the ceiling, but is switched by a standard wall switch.
The light box has a motorised flickerwheel and is set to its slowest setting so they twinkle quite nicely.
Each fibre is glued in place from above with a drop of PU glue just to make sure they dont slip down.
Total project took about 4 days to complete.

My only complaint is that they are too bright on their dimmest setting, so I'll be changing the LED for a lower powered one sometime soon.

fantastic!

yeah i dumped the "put it all on a board idea" an have started drilling the ceiling

only issue i have is the previous owners must have fitted new ceilings upstairs, so i had to smash through the old ceiling to get to the boards

rockwool an 1910 plaster dust (asbestos!?)

10 fibres in so far Cool
