winter riding weather forecast and ice careful there

Hello,

In the winter I am always looking for the weather forecast, mostly ice section and what is the dew/frost point for the next day.

Yesterday the forecast for today was 8am dry no precipitation at all and -2 degrees, but the dew point was -3. So no ice formation expected right?

Wrong. This morning I am riding my bike, the road is very dry and there is no ice.

However approaching blind almost 120 degree bend for some reason I have slowed down almost to a 5mph. How lucky I have done that. Some broken pipe or something there was nice and steady water stream dripping across the road, which actually has frozen to a nice ice ring on the bend. Which I have passed fine due to above slow down.

Am I lucky or what

My commute is country lanes past many fields and a river. Large sections are permanently wet, covered in horse shit, mud and gravel... not great in winter. Its an extra 80 miles a week, but there is a dual carriageway alternative, usually gritted.

I found this website to be useful in the past couple of winters. Can select "road" in the tabs at the bottom.

The positive predictive value is good, the negative predictive value is less so. I.e. if it says the road is frozen, it usually is. If it says it isn't frozen, it still might be.

You really can't get much useful info from a website, the most dangerous type of ice can form in sheltered spots after a clear night or even clear day when it's surprisingly mild.
If the road looks at all wet and hasn't obviously been treated there is ALWAYS a risk of icy patches in a dip or behind a hedge if it's clear at this time of year.

Your local council's website will have a highways section where you can report problems with the roads - mine has a special box for "ice forming". I think it's like potholes - once they've been informed, they hold liability, so they seem quick to get it sorted round my way, even if it means leaning on landowners etc; no-one is allowed to discharge water onto the road anyway like that.

Visited the woman up tc north. Got fucked up bit the high winds down south, then sun for the middle of my trip, then snow and ice abruptly around a corner in ze north.

Fuck you UK weather, at least be consistent for the whole country.
