PostPosted: 09:19 - 30 Nov 2015    Post subject: ZZR-600E3 Rev counter and Speedo Issue Reply with quote

Hi, I'm looking for some advice.

Switched 'er on this morning and noticed that the rev needle was slow to respond and only sat at 2k on the choke, it usually goes closer to 4k but I thought it might just be being slow to pick up the revs. It stayed put so I gave the throttle a little blip and no response.

I thought, OK I'll just start riding, it might sort itself out. Wishful thinking I know. Throughout the ride, the rev counter did rise and fall but VERY gradually reaching a maximum of 4k, when sitting on the road to work I'd aim to be at 60-70mph and 6k revs ish.

Another, but probably related, issue. My speedo. Works fine up to 50 mph and then nothing, no changes despite going a bit faster. I always thought my speedo was purely mechanical, from the drive in the front wheel? Prolonged speed over 50 allowed the speedo to reach 60 but then on slowing, it was very slow to respond and drop below 50 where the response is at least as I'd expect.

I could have been going at any old speed today and with the number of speed cameras on the way, I'd like to be sure what I'm doing.

So I suppose for both issues, has anybody else come across similar issues? My Haynes is at home and I'm at work so I can't start reading through til tonight.

Cheers.

Weird how it's both at once. Although both dials are on the same dash, I would have thought they'd be independent of each other?

Well that's it, below 50 mph, the speedo seems to work just fine. But once I get up to 50, the speedo will not increase while obviously accelerating. I'm going to take the clocks out and check the connections, maybe some water has got in somewhere and it's playing silly buggers with the clock's operation.

Pretty sure the speedo is totally separate and purely cable driven.
Clocks not got wet or anything recently?

I thought it was completely cable too but why would it be fine up to a given speed and then be crap?

Did they get wet? Yes, along with the rest of the bike, the rain has been torrential all weekend.

My initial plan tonight is to get the clocks out and spray all the electrics with any old water dispersing agent I can get my paws on. If that doesn't solve it, I wouldn't know what to do apart from replacing the clocks.

The rain this weekend will most certainly be the cause.

Speedo is purely mechanical, I've replaced the cable on mine twice in three years, however water can get in and wash the grease out, especially the drive unit

mine actually seized in the drive unit so might be worth carefully removing the cable from the drive unit, spraying with WD40 and then chunking some grease in there.

I've replaced the cable in the past too.

On my way home the rev counter started working again, it's been sat under a cover at work all day so has had chance to dry.

The speedo also kind of freed up giving me speeds upto about 65 or so. I think the grease of the speedo is giving up so I'm going to try and blast some lubrication into it. I'll have to see how I go.

Just a quick post to share my experience. The clocks worked fine this morning. It must be water in the "system" somewhere that has since dried off. I'm due to be giving the ol' girl a service very soon so while various parts of the bodywork are off I'll be going over all my plugs and earths to make sure they're top notch.
