Me again, hola seniors..

It's going to be a little while before I can get a new downpipe sorted. As of now it's still channelling some exhaust fumes because I can feel it out the back, but there's a complete severance between the pipe and the engine block.

Aside from a medium loss in back pressure, what damage can this cause? I've tried researching it and posts concerning damage are due to the downpipe being completely absent. Mine's there, and in the right place, just there is a small small gap between the downpipe and the downpipe collar which is still in the engine block.

The pipe itself barely moves, but you can wiggle it, so exhaust fumes are being roughly directed into the pipe and out the exhaust can.

Last thing I need is a damaged engine.

Cheers,
- Chris

Should be ok - might run a little lean due to a little less back pressure - if you are worried (and are likely to be binning the downpipe once a new one has been bought), get some exhaust tape and seal it with that...

Usually over works the engine as you're having to use full throttle all the time due to no back pressure. Can't you get the exhaust off and take it to a local engineering firm and get them to braze it for you? My dad had a VFR1000 that the pipe separated completely from the collector box and he did that. Think local engineers charged him about £15 or so and was stronger than the original.

The exhaust valve can take a bit of a pounding so I certainly wouldn't run it hard or for too long. That aside, it'll be blowing 00's of degrees C temperature out of the join so anything in that area will see some extreme heat.

All that said, I pounded an old CG around for a fair few miles, with a 10p sized hole in the top of the downpipe, and everything was ok.

I've probably done about 50 miles over nearly 2 weeks now :/ New pipe should be here shortly. I have checked the area after a ride and nothing aside from the pipe seems to hot which suggests that the breach between the pipe and the engine isn't severely huge, otherwise as you said, it would have melted the fairings that are in close proximity to the pipe.
