I am 21, as soon as i turned 17 i ditched the 50cc and did my full bike test, then got riding straight away. I loved it, and always was of the opinion that cars were for boring people, and had no intention of getting one. However, i did my driving test last December, and since then i found myself coming onto to this forum less and less. In fact i haven't been on here for a good few months, other than today, and i am using my bike less and less, even in the summer just gone.
Don't get me wrong, it still came out, but instead of coming out every day like had been the case for the previous 3/4 years, it came out maybe once every week or two, even in the middle of summer!! In fact, it hasn't even been insured for the last month, i only insured it earlier today as my brother needs to borrow my car for a while, and i need to get about.
I never thought i'd choose a car over a bike, but it seems to have happened! It just seems like the easy option to jump in the car, over getting on bike gear and getting it out of the garage.
Has anyone else caught this disease? Or is it just me suffering from it? ____________________ Generic XOR 50, Gilera SMT 50, GSXR 400 GK73A, Ducati Monster 600, Honda Hornet 600.

My car's a domestic appliance, like the washing machine, and like the washing machine gets most use and least thought or enthusiasm.
Some folk get all enthusiast about trains, other's just use them to get places. Enthusiasm doesn't have to be proportional to use, or participation.
How much time do Drag Racers spend actually 'riding'? What, three or four ten second runs in a day, maybe six or eight events in a season? Lets be generous and say they get maybe half an hours riding in a year! Doe that mean they get that much less pleasure, or are that much less of an enthusiast than the get-to-work commuter who has no interest their C90 beyond the cheap tax and high mpg, but spends 300 hours a year n the saddle going to and from work? ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I started riding bikes as a schoolboy, got my full bike licence within a few weeks of turning 17, the car test took a little longer (due to having a bike accident) but I still did it within 6 months.
Ever since, I've always had a car and bike at my disposal - some years the bike gets used a lot, some it doesn't get used at all.
Because I've been a bike user/owner for over 35 years, I consider myself a biker, whether I've ridden one recently or not.
If other people think of me differently, so what? ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Swings and round abouts really, ive pretty much always had both car and bike since I was 15,
I currently only have bikes, but im missing my classic car that is still in nz,
I might buy one at some point, or I might buy a bedford rascal,
Or I might buy nothing, and keep riding.
To me, both cars and bikes are a mode of transportation, and then they are a way of of having fun,
There is no wrong answer, apart from not having a bike,
Thats always a wrong answer. ____________________ the humans are dead

If you want to keep interested in riding bikes, I think there are times when you need to re-invent your riding life. When I started out, I rarely got more than 20 or 30 miles from home, going to the same places all the time, riding the same roads, plus a dull weekend motorway commute. If that's all I did now, I'd soon lose interest.
Bikes can make the commute easier, maybe even more fun - for a while. But anything you do day in and day out becomes a chore if there's no variation. They're just not about simple transport in my view, although they can be useful for that. First and foremost, they need to be about fun.
Variation - that's the key. Go different places, ride roads you haven't explored before, go to a few race meets, do some track days, go touring, go for rides with mates and go on trips alone. And then there's trying different bikes. You can get bored with the same bike sometimes; if you've always had IL4s, try a V-Twin, a triple, a 2 stroke, whatever. You wouldn't be the first to discover that all you needed to rekindle the enthusiasm was a change of steed.
Alternatively, you're just not going fast enough... ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

As for cars - it depends which ones we starting about. I've often heard it said that the crappiest of bikes is better than the best of cars and think that massively overeggs it. I'd much rather be in my car than riding a CB 500 hack around but then I've got a nice car - if given the choice of an FZ6 for the day or something totally horrid like an Astra diesel it'd be a no brainer |
Exactly Mr Porsche I hate driving, but then I've only driven for work and driven $hit cars (the highlight being a 2.0L Mondeo). Also I can actually park my bike at work, and don't have to sit in traffic with all the cagers.
The cost's a massive factor too, particularly if you're young. Realistically you're looking at something horrid for your first car (1.0 Corsa, Punto maybe), when with bikes you can buy/insure/run something half decent.
Overall comparing the cars I've driven to bikes I've ridden, I'd say cars are pretty soulless, with numb steering, numb brakes. On a bike you feel everything, you're part of the machine, I'd guess it feels more like a bond with an animal. |

I can't use my bike for work, because I can't get a big enough trailer behind it.
Bike also gets used less in summer - my bike gear doesn't have windows I can open to cool down.
There we go, I said it - I'm mainly a seasonal biker - autumn, winter and spring with occasional summer rides if it's not too hot ____________________ Any and all advice given should not be followed - if you have to ask it means you don't know so get a man in to do it for you. |

Quite a few replies on this topic!
I rode my bike to work today, and it did kind of make me want to use it more again, i think its more the fact that i get used to driving the car, and forget that it is actually much more fun on a bike.
I sometimes feel i should ditch the car anyway, as i pay a lot less attention when I'm in the car, not intentionally of course, but it just seems to happen. ____________________ Generic XOR 50, Gilera SMT 50, GSXR 400 GK73A, Ducati Monster 600, Honda Hornet 600.
