I'm starting to rebuild another Honda XL125 engine.
Whilst inspecting the camshaft I noticed that there is some damage to the hole that holds the dowel pin, that locates the advance retard mechanism, part 15 on the diagram below:-

It looks like at some point the tiny dowel pin has come out and been squashed over and into the shaft. So, next to the locating hole there is now an indentation which is reducing the depth of the locating hole on one side.

My question is, is this camshaft now scrap?
The locating pin that's in there at the moment does not wobble, nor is it stuck in place but, will it hold up with the engine running?
The motor was obviously running before I got it.
Would glueing the locating pin in place be any better than current situation?
Alternatively, should I just buy another cam?

I found the same issue on my BSA.
Some careless cnut had previously mashed the points drive taper shaft into the end of the camshaft and crushed the dowel in the process.

There was still enough of the dowel hole to align a drill bit in.
I drilled it down about 4mm more and chapped a new dowel in. (the shoulder of a small non-descript bolt cut to size).

I clashed it together and was perfect. It was running like a bag of shite before the repair.

If you still have 'some' of the dowel hole intact then it may be a fix for you.

The dowel is really only for alignment during assembly as the 'taper-fit' holds everything timed after assembly

A smart arsed welder could fill the hole with a MIG weld without doing damage the the shaft.
(Assuming you know to Pre-mark the hole centre before welding and grinding/filing.)

Unfortunately, there is no taper on this shaft, however I've just bolted everything onto the camshaft and tightened up to "finger tight", I can't feel any movement.
I've also had the magnifying glass out and the hole seems to have been elongated in two directions, at right angles to each other, the dowel pin seems to go in at a slight angle, along the axis of the shaft.
I've found a new cam for not a lot of money so I might go with that, then try to repair the old one!

I had exactly the same problem on my CB125S back in the mid-70s.The dowel pin came out while on the way to Navy College and the only thing I could do to hold it in place securely was to split one end in a vice and then to tap it into place with a small hammer.This worked okay for the next 36,000 miles that I owned the bike Thumbs Up
