Portuguese licence

Hey guys,
This is my first post here!

I'm not a biker (yet!), I have a Portuguese car license and I'm considering getting the motorcycle license in the UK.

Now my question is: should I start the license as if I didn't have any license, do all theory, etc, or convert my Portuguese license to a British one and then get the motorcycle license. This second option might be easier if getting a motorcycle license already having the car one is quicker.

Please let me know what you think as I'm not familiar with the way this works in the uk.

From memory - Google for details of each step.

1. Obtain a UK licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement (category A).
2. CBT.
3. Pass theory test.
4. Pass module 1 & 2.
5. Your Portuguese B licence is exchanged to A+B UK one.

Things to note:
1. existing B licence makes no difference to the time/process of getting A.
2. prepare to argue with car insurers. You will end up having a UK licence since passing your bike test with car entitlement backdated to whenever you got your Portuguese car licence. Next time you renew your car insurance you will spend hours explaining that, for example, 2015-1999=16 and not 3.

Thanks cdlxxvi, if it takes the same effort to get category A with out without B, why wouldn't I keep my Portuguese license for B and get the A by itself?

The advantage I see with that is I only have to renew my PT car license in about 30 years..
There might be other advantages I'm not thinking about right now too.

Also possible the DVLA will screw up your licence groups. Probably won't screw up and lose your car entitlement (and if they do should be easy enough to fix), but some chance they screw up and give you full motorcycle entitlement

Hi. I am also a biker wanna be and I believe it's better to not open a new thread.
My EU B licence was changed in UK one and DVLA give me AM cat with 122 code and A with 79(3) code.
So, I can ride a bike now or I have to pass CBT test?
I want an 125cc for starting

You aren't suppose to have two licences, but then if you were to just apply for a UK provisional and then do your bike test, I don't think the DVLA are going to go to their Portuguese equivalents and ask 'oh does Mr .... currently hold a licence with you"
