Firstly, I'm pretty much decided to chalk this one up to experience but wanted people's views,

The item I've ordered cost about £10 with the item title listing that it's made from one material but in the description that it's another (oops)
It doesn't make the item un-usable but is equivalent to it being dark blue instead of black.

If it were on e-bay I'd be claiming the item title was misleading, should I do the same here or just learn when ordering from china that you read the description, pay your money and take your chance?

If it really matters, kick up.
If you're writing a review it wouldn't hurt to forewarn others.

Use the 'Open Dispute' button on the 'My Orders' page.

Works exactly the same as ebay and you will get your money back.

Seller then usually updates the ad.

Message seller and tell them. Some really value their feedback scores and others dont care.

If they are not interested then leave bad feedback. Dont bother using the Customer Service escalation thing - useless.

I used to use it quite a bit but have now pretty much ceased as sellers were increasingly doing exactly what you have had done. Use someone elses photo to sell a 'similar' item. When you moan, they tell you it is your eyes or computer monitor.

Ordering crap from lying Chinese sellers? Paid by paypal, no delivery tracking?

Those things often fail to get delivered, leaving paypal no choice but to issue a refund.

No Paypal on Aliexpress, they use their own 'Alipay'.

Pretty much this.

I've ordered a fair amount of stuff from aliexpress and only a handful of things that have had problems.

Some will refund you the £, some will refund you the £ and send you a replacement.

Some will refund you the £, send you a replacement AND ask for your paypal address to give you some extra £

Do not give your paypal address unless you want to be rinsed.
