Hello,

Yesterday after shopping at Pets at home my wife and I returned to the car to drop the shopping and while getting set to go a man parked next to us and slammed his drivers door against my passenger door. He left a red paintmark of about 12cm long and a dent of about 1.5 inches.

He did apologize but when prompted for his insurance details he decided to briskly walk away. I yelled that I was calling the police if he didn't stop but he proceeded to go to the iceland, make his shopping and walk back to the car and drive away...

I did of course manage to take a picture and write down his reg, car make and model and colour and a nice video of him driving away from the incident. I called the police but they advised to call my insurer and the non emergency number. My insurer (TESCO) wasn't very helpful as it was out of office so someone took all the details and these will be passed on to my insurer on Monday, I suppose they will call me then.

Upon calling the non emergency number, surprise surprise they said the police "does not deal with this sort of matters" which is obviously BS. Damage to someone's property? Driving away afterwards? Surely. Anyway, managed to persuade her to take the details and give me a crime number to give to my insurer.

Does anyone know where to take it from here? I've never had an incident with either my motorcycle nor my car in my whole life.
I suppose I will know more tomorrow but what happens when the person responsible for the damage walks away? Can I expect my insurer to chase? Any pointers on where things will go from here and what to expect would be appreciated guys.
Feel free to ask any more questions, can't give you all the other car details for obvious reasons.

Cheers,

D.

Call the DVLA pay the £3 fee get his address from his number plate then start a small claims against him?

Insurance ought to indemnify him.

But tbh this is why I park in far away parking bays.

Thanks Itchy, it's good to know what to expect from insurers. I would've thought they would follow up with him... though we'll see tomorrow.

Funny enough we DID park far away on purpose as the car is technically newish Sad

Will this likely to increase the price of my insurance? The engine wasn't even running.

Any CCTV in the car park?

It's got the square root of sod all to do with your insurers unless you're making a claim against your own fully comp cover. You've now got a "loss" to declare for 5 years.

Car parks are a public place, RTA 1988 S170 applies.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/170

Please fire in with a complaint against the force involved; this bollocks needs to stop. It only takes minutes to do so.

Far more satisfying would be to do what I did on a car park, after a guy hit my car while I was sat in it. He apologised, then when asked what he was going to do about the damage to mine, he said "It's only a f*ckin car." and walked off.

Well, as Emo Philips once said, I backed up (my Isuzu Trooper) and gave his car a good hard push with my beefy bumper until his drivers door was concave. Very satisfying.

Don't judge me, don't hate me......he deserved it.

This was before camera phones, CCTV etc

Go see if they have any CCTV? I expect such a person to try and worm out of it.

Depends... for Paddy it never has done. But some others it does.

Nothing like someone who knows what's going on Rogerborg! Thanks for the link and the info, this proves valuable when I file that complaint too. I felt it was a bunch of crap when I was being told the police doesn't deal with these matters. I will follow up with them tomorrow too for sure.

Wish me luck, I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

How the hell can the police say 'not our problem' when they've got an easy bag for leaving the scene without exchanging details?

Did you take this to your local station or call 999? The latter is for emergencies which would explain why they weren't interested. Visit station, explain that cockwomble left after apologising but would not exchange details.
Get an incident number

If no joy call your Police County HQ and kick up a shit storm.

Meanwhile get his address from DVLA and take it from there (BCF have been known to appreciate that kind of info in the past Laughing )

Because the villain has up to[*] 24 hours to fess up to a copper and uncrime it.

[*] In practice, although it should be "as soon as is reasonably practicable".

911, Morrisons, so much disappoint.

The peasants will never appreciate an automobile fine enough to lick clean, try shopping in Waitrose instead.

I don't think I've ever been inside an Asda. I assume the interior is a bit like Westgate Nairobi the day after the attack, or Hastings in February.

ASDA Click and Collect - stand with car, load shopping in private ( and covered ) bay and leave without having had to enter the store.

A guy reversed into my wifes car this time last year out side our house, took reg, name and phone number and didnt hear from the guy again. Phone number stoped working after a few hours so I phoned 101 and her insurance, Police have done fuck all but tell me its my insurance problem, the insurance say he's non traceable so can only claim on her insurance loosing her no claims. I then saw the guy driving the same car so opened his door at the lights and videoed him in the car. Then called the police on 101 and they told me to stop causing trouble and leave it to my insurance. Then get a call from my local neighbourhood pcso telling me to leave it as the guy is trouble and I could be escalating things.

I was so pissed off but what can I do, basically you can get away with this type of thing where I live because the police wont do anything about it and tell you to not make trouble. I know the guys name, his face and his facebook page but dont have his address.

So:

Managed to call my insurer which turns out to be aviva rather than tesco (don't ask, I didn't understand either) but thankfully the person behind the phone was knowledgeable enough and has provided enough information.

-Will go to the parking area / shopping centre and try to get a CCTV if available to prove that the damage was caused by the third party. If successful then my insurance will follow through with this guy and get the money from his insurer.

-Will get the damage evaluated £ and see what happens.

-Won't bother with the police anymore as I've called and have gotten nothing but incompetent answers and no clear action.

-Will most definitively file a complaint against the police force as damage to anyone's property shouldn't, in my eyes, be taken so lightly especially when it is considered an offence to walk away. Otherwise we can all go kick people doors in, whilst inside a car park in the driver's faces and shrug it off.

-If I get a CCTV I may share it :>

I will certainly not be letting anyone walk away from damage and think that I'm covered any more. Certainly will try to grab a witness next time as my wife for some reason "doesn't count as a witness". Sheesh.

Thanks for the support so far, all.

I'd park next to you every time. I always choose cars which are likely to be the owner's pride and joy to park alongside. To me, it suggests that they are more likely to show reasonable care when entering or exiting their vehicle and the space itself. I know I'm not going to damage yours and I can only hope you're not going to damage mine but an owner that cares about their car is less likely to go door-twatting with it.

I have recently purchased a Toyota Avensis for £300 which we always take to the shops.

It's amazing - I can park that car ANYWHERE.

Its sad times, but in this day and age it's just better not to have anything nice where people can damage it.
