Getting a bit fed up with the on-board graphics on my PC so thought a slight upgrade was in order. Don't need high end, just a bit better so I bought a Asus GT740-OC-1GBGDDR5 PCI express 3.0.

Installed it OK but am having no end of trouble getting the driver to work for it. Tried disabling the onboard graphics in BIOS, tried a program called Display Driver Uninstaller to get rid of all traces of old drivers, but cannot get it to run on the proper driver, only the crappy VGA driver that windows installs for it. Also I can only get it to boot in safe mode - when booting normally I get a black screen just as the login screen appears and it restarts itself.

Motherboard is an ASRock FM2A55M-HD+, the card does not need any additional power other than what it gets from the slot, and I have a 600W PSU in there so can't imagine I have any power issues.

Has anyone got any suggestions? I can't imagine it can be this hard, and I'm buggered if I want to hand over £50 to PC world to sort it out for me.

Cheers

I had similar issues, I'm sure the resident expert cansa will be around shortly.

I managed it by installing GPU getting into windows in VGA made either by BIOS and plugging cable into onboard graphics, just tinker then installing latest updates online ...
I had a nightmare.

It's the Intel onboard graphics which is a cunt

On that note my PC blew up tonight
Best start new thread though

My suggestion is to update the bios of the motherboard, if that won't help, time to buy a new motherboard or a GPU. My brother had similar problems with a new GPU in his computer, updating the bios (Asus MB) did not help, so it was time to send the GPU back and getting another one.

Oddly enough, the GPU he got next was the same, but from a different card manufacturer. It worked well ever since. As I know Asrock, their MB's tend to be a bit ''special'' when it comes to certain HW and even operating systems. For instance, some Asrock MBs couldn't recognize a booteable Win 7 DVD. The answer of Asrock was, well put the OS on your flash drive, duh?! Thinking

So, no. 1, update the bios, then if nothing, get a new MB or GPU. Thumbs Up

Boot into windows using on board graphics.
Get all win updates
uninstall any ASRock bloatware. The "speed up overclock 12million ghz" software they bundle with the motherboard. etc etc

Grab the drivers direct from asus.
https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A55M-HD+/?cat=Download

power down, fit new card, boot into windows still with the monitor connected to the onboard graphics.

Install the drivers you downloaded from asus, see if they pick up the GT740

Reboot when asked, boot into bios using new gfx card, disable onboard gfx.

reboot into windows.

if that fails....

Try booting into a Live Linux CD.
Grab a Linux Mint iso or something, and burn it to disc.
Boot, check graphics, etc etc

if that goes arse over tit, send the bugger back and buy a NVidia GTX something.
