My hands have been aching quite a bit of late on the bike, mainly my left hand from stop start traffic / lots of junctions & filtering, seems to have started after getting new Spada journey gloves which have a fair bit of leather, my old gloves were textile,

is it just the gloves stretching and wearing in?

I find it takes a few rides for new gloves to stretch and wear in, like you for the first few rides my hands ache like mad if I need to do a lot of clutch work but they soon loosen up.

You probably need the next size up.

This was my first though too.

You could try stretching them and see if that helps.

This is why I never buy online.
With gloves I put them on in the shop and find a bit of tubing (or actual handlebars in a bike dealers) and wrap my hands around it to get a feel for what the gloves will be like when actually riding. Often seemingly good fitting gloves don't feel right.

Whatever you go for in leather they will take a while to break in, bit like shoes.

Probably a little too tight across the knuckles. Your hand gets fatter when you squeeze the clutch. They probably fit fine when your hands are more relaxed.

This one is hard to answer on a forum... if the gloves are not comfortable after 2 or 3 weeks of use then i think you got the wrong size.

My revit gloves were just a touch stiff (not tight or uncomfortable) for about a week if i remember correctly and then they were fine.

I bought new gloves for winter and yes I had the same problem. They were the correct size but I found I could hardly feel my clutch with them on, being so stiff and making my hands ache. Now, its been a few months of breaking in, they are super comfy and bend how I want them.

I had this issue with my new gloves, hands ached after 20 minutes. Then after a few weeks they stretched out and feel fine now.

If the fingers are straight and the leather is new, you are constantly fighting against the gloves just to maintain a curved grip. My gloves are made with pre-curved fingers, meaning they naturally form a gripped shape when relaxed. A small but effective detail.

As above though, try wearing them off the bike, or use a leather balm to soften them.

Or take the usual BCF advice and MTFU, slack chain and Gary.

My first set of gloves were on the tight side when new, they did stretch out but were never quite big enough, should have gone a size up.
They would shrink if they got wet and dried out again - which was annoying. After 5 years I was glad when a hole appeared in the palm and I had to replace them.

It sounds like what I had when I bought a cheap set of buffallo winter gloves off ebay last year. They were much thicker than normal gloves and thinsulate type inner with a thin leather outer. Supposedly waterproof.

Within 20 minutes on the first ride my thumbs were killing me, and it happened for about a fortnight or so (maybe 100-200 miles). After that they softened up and now they are really soft and probably need replacing. The velcro on them has lost it's stickiness.

In answer to your question; I think they just need breaking in. I reckon a ride in the wet would help them soften up, or wear in the bath or something.

I tried on the size smaller and the size larger before getting these, it's the base of my palm / thumb that aches most, more than my fingers do.

Wore different gloves today and much better so will see how we go.
