Looking at buying some gear but honestly can't make my mind up, looking at a one piece suit, 2 piece suit but needs to zip together if need be or set of textiles. I know a lot of people are going to say personal choice but just after opinions. Be used for just road riding mainly for having fun and some longer distance. Thanks

If you want all seasons, all weather then textile with goretex or similar water proofing is the way to go.

My last set of gear was a top and bottom goretex suit. Rain no problem just continue riding.

With leathers you need to carry a water proof layer so you need to stop and put them on. Or get lucky and for it not to rain.

Also bear in mind that some textile materials like Codura bite into the road (as opposed to sliding) when you come off. This might cause you to roll and cause twisting injuries but you stop sooner.

Leather OTOH when you come off the friction causes it to liquefy slightly making it slide sacrificing itself for your skin. Great if you have plenty of space to slide off into. Not so great as you may slide into the opposite lane and into traffic coming the other way.

Plus they may help keep your insides inside which loose clothing doesn't.

My RST textiles zip together, which I know because I did it, once.

Unless you're track racing where it's required then I wouldn't make it a deal breaker.

What I would venture to suggest that if you're even considering a one piece gimpsuit then you should get leathers simply because textiles are unlikely to fit your self image. There's no point in talking yourself into something that you don't really want, you'll just develop buyer's regret.

Leathers + waterproofs is perfectly practical, plenty of riders do it.

I'm watching this thread with interest as I'm strongly considering moving from kevlar jeans to either textile or leather trousers..

It's just a tough call at the minute, never really thought about textile gripping the floor to be honest. But then again sliding into a kerb in leathers is gunna do a lot of damage too. Weathers not a issue cause will pick and choose when I'm riding and not to bothered about getting caught in a shower every now and again. Only reason I was asking about a two piece that zips together as didn't know if the jacket would ride up in the event of a accident causing exposed skin?

There are far too many variables to determine if this will happen or not.

My full leather suit split open at the seams yet my skin wasn't roadrashed to hell.

Leathers for sliding down the road, textiles for everything else. Wink

Oh, oh, I'll do Tef: you spend a lot more time riding the bike than you do crashing it.

Oh I dunno about that... around 2007 we had a serial killer of motorbikes.

He crashed 4 bikes in one year and spent more time in hospital than riding it.

Don't buy a one piece, eat too many fried breakfasts and find it's so tight it turns you into a lady Laughing

Leather pants and textile jacket. Have textile pants for work or really bad weather.

Do kevlar jeans even come with any padding and/or knees and hips protection? I crashed a motorcycle on the tar only once and I'm pretty certain, that if I had no knee protectors and proper boots, it wouldn't be just bruising that happened that day. Thumbs Up

Some have pockets for you to put padding in. Some don't.

I see, I mean, you can't prevent bruising, but you sure can prevent comminuted fractures of your bones and serious ankle injuries, wearing proper gear. Mind you, I ride in rather cheap textile gear, but it's got all the protective stuff and as I was saying, it was very nice to have it when I had my tar dance. Thumbs Up

Fuck textiles, sure they may offer as much if not more protection (in different ways) than leather but moto GP where leathers and they can be used after offs. Mine seem okay when it's wet as have covered them in beeswax leather protector shit, can always throw on waterproof jacket in the rain.

MotoGP tracks also have large gravel run off areas where riders can fall/slide/role without fear of being run down by something else.

Personally I prefer textile if it is a dodgy looking day.

I've put on my leather trousers and stuck a pair of jeans on top with my textile jacket. I have a pair of dedicated riding jeans that are not going to be used for anything else really and I have sprayed the water proof spray for tents etc on the jeans... kind of works.

If you have mates that ride and they have a selection of gear, ask if you could borrow jacket + trousers and see how they feel.

one piece leathers - only recommended for track days if you ask me, they are just a pain otherwise. hot days cant sit with jacket off and removing them after a full days riding is a chore Smile

2 peice leathers - if you blast about for several hours, do short trips and like to look 'cool' these are for you

textiles - look a bit crappy (personal opinion), better for longer commutes, tours and keeping dry

i've got textiles and leathers, tend to use the leathers for messing about and the textiles for commuting and longer trips.
