Car drivers are careless in general, living in their seemingly indestructible bubbles.

I live just off a preferred fast exit route for the fire service in my area, there's enough space for 3 large vehicles side by side for the most part. However, there are two stage pedestrian crossing islands at most junctions.

When I see/hear an emergency vehicle approaching I leave a 10-15m gap to the crossing island. I'm guessing 70-80% of the time I then have 2 or 3 cars pull in front blocking the junction. This leaves the fire engine stuck in the middle of the road until the junction clears, which doesn't happen that quickly because no one wants to move now a fire engine is at the junction. Crazy thing is it's the locals who are most likely to do this, the very ones who should be most aware of the problems.
