Does anyone know of a *free* program to transfer SMS, media and Whatsapp data from a iphone to a Nexus 5?

There are loads of programs out there that will do it, but they're all £20 or thereabouts. I'm already fed up of these programs not telling you what the free trial will do until you download and try them!

Failing that, and without jailbreaking the iphone, can someone outline a manual method of transferring this data?

Can't you do most of this by sticking it on Dropbox/Google Drive or something?

Ok, I should really amend the first line... It's primarily whatsapp that I'm struggling with, the rest is done. All of the links on the first two pages of your search are already purple from my previous lack of initiative Mr. Green

I've extracted all of the Whatsapp data from the iphone, however it's not packaged in a format that Whatsapp android will see as backup data to restore from in the new instance. Any ideas?

Contacts, OS-stored media and calendar etc yes, whatsapp no.

In WhatsApp, go to Settings -> Chats and calls -> Chat backup. All will be revealed.

Do elaborate? That will backup all of my whatsapp chats and media to icloud, but what I'm looking for is a free way to get this data from the backup onto the Android.

I think you've missed the boat.
I'm trying to migrate my data from the iPhone, to the Android phone. You cannot backup iOS whatsapp data to Google Drive.

WhatsApp doesn't support iPhone to Android data migration. You can't do it from the app.

Third party tools do exist, but you have to pay for them. However for £20? A bit less. My first Google result is £2.30: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nbeghin.whatsappmigrator

You'll either have to dig deep to see if someone offers a free tool, code your own, or put a price on keeping your WhatsApp data.

Or if you really don't want to pay, it's not that hard to find free copies of paid Android Apps.
