Hello,

I'm trying to sort out my house and was thinking that the helmets can stay in the garage with the bike, but I've read exposure to prolonged sunshine and other BS can affect them somehow (...science?)

Can exposure to cold over the winter in the garage affect them at all? It will get as cold as the outside temperature in there.

Thanks,

D

I think your biggest risk is the interior becoming damp and horrible, rather than any structural problems. I keep mine inside the house for that reason.

Yup, damp can be an issue.

If you're thinking that you will be leaving a lid over winter and not using it, put it in a box and put some silica gel bags in there too.

I would check it periodically and replace/dry out the bags (some of them can be regenerated in the microwave).

Exposure to Spider Spunk may be a worry. Smile

I leave mine in it's wee bag in the garage.
There is nothing in it that will rot.

If you have a silica dry pack you could aye pack that in it and tie the hoowur up in a bin bag belt and braces style-eee.

Just take it out and 'air' it in fresh air before doning.

To save any crud from your spotty face or mangie head growing in there whilst the lid is left un-attended
If you can be phaphed it may be an idea to service the lining before storing.
As long as you don't have any electronics fitted:
Wash it using hair shampoo (medicated if you like) and warm water.
Don't use a dual shampoo/conditioner.
Rinse with clean warm water.
Towel it dry by pushing a dry towel into it and soak up the bulk of the water.
And then let it dry NOT TOO near a rad in the house.
There is nothing in there that is sensitive to water as your nut sweats gallons into the helmet whilst in use.

I keep my helmets atop the refrigerator.

It means that they don't get too hot from being sat in the sun on those occasions when I feel like an off-season ride.

All my kit lives in the garage, it's ok in the spring/summer but can feel pretty cold and damp this time of year so I normally dump what I'll be wearing the next day in the kitchen before I go to bed so it's nice and toasty in the morning.

I have a cupboard that used to house the hot water tank when there was solid fuel heating. Is now full of helmets, gloves, and the like.
