 |
|
I feel like a numpty for having to ask for second opinions in regards to if the sprocket looks worn but I'd rather ask on here first than a shop/mechanic with pound signs in their eyes. Yes it would be cheaper to attempt to DIY but I'm a potato with a spanner, I'll empty my pockets if it means someone else doing the job I don't know how to. Anyway..
The sprocket / chain has covered 3417 miles and that's rounding up so it's actually done less than that. Has been on the bike for just over a year (if that makes any difference). Pulling the chain of the rear sprocket doesn't even reveal half a tooth (see bottom picture). Main concern is with the condition of the rear sprocket. I was always told that if the rear looks like it needs replacing then the front almost certainty does because it works x2 as hard (or rotates x2 as much as the rear). And yes I'm aware to replace front, rear and chain as a kit.
Last time I visited the mechanic in regards to another job he told me I'd be better of putting the money towards a new chain and sprocket (at the time he was referring to when the time arrives).
My options are;
(a) Phone up today and book in for early next week meaning that I'd only cover 50 miles max on this sprocket/chain set.
(b) Leave it and wait until the next service in aprox. 1000 miles (rounding up) and have it done all in one go.
Opinions?

Clean, Loob (with chain lube) Since you are properly concerned to do it right then chain lube as opposed to the various concoctions suggested on forums. We use chains to drive equipment in the oil field and we never use old oil to oil anything we 'care' about,
Adjust according to OEM spec. (to the tightest slack) and enjoy.
That Splocket looks very usable. Judging by your pics.
There seem to be enough lube on it (or is that paraffin?)
3000 miles is waaaaaay too early to need to consider a chain/sprocket job.
I fcuked the chain on a bike when the last tyre person knocked the scotoiler nib off the sprocket (my excuse as I wasn't maintaining the things as I should have. ) But I still got 6k miles out of it and only replaced the chain 'only' due to a couple of dry links. The bike did make a strange 'whung' 'whung' noise at m/way speed too. Probably the tight-slack-tight-slack of the chain.
too for posting sharp photos which show the bit/s you're banging on about. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |

Have a look at the front sprocket as well. You may find that's hooked (or not) - just examining the rear isn't really enough to tell whether the whole lot needs changing or not. |

You might aswell get a new chain and sprocket set anyway - if you are in no rush you can look for the best price.
Better than having to pay top-dollar when you are desperate
When it arrives, you will at least have a shiny new sprocket to compare it with side-by-side. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)
